For said proposition Against said proposition Daring Couple Explores India's Sacred Ganges River and Plain Riding an amphibious jeep, up and down India's sacred Ganges River, a young American cou ple has had an unusual and high ly informative adventure. Helen and Frank Schreider, who gave up industrial careers four years ago to travel and write, told their story in the Oct ober National Geographic Mag azine. Their craft was the Tortuga II, similar to the pioneering Tor tuga I which they wore out making an earlier 20,000-mile trip from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Outfitted as Home For the Indian journey, the Schreiders bought Tortuga II in a World War II surplus depot, and outfitted it with bunks, a sink, alcohol stove and a seat for their German "shepherd, "Dinah." They' made the jeep river-going by installing a rear propeller with a drive shaft run- j ning through a rubber-sealed hole in the steel hull. A rudder j was connected to the steering. wheel. Thus equipped, the Schreiders arrived in Calcutta and obtained the Government's permission to travel the vast sweep of land and river that is the heart of India's life, history, and religion. In five months on wheels arid afloat, they scaled mountains, swam rivers, and fought mud. In landing, the jeep once sank to the hullln black, jellylike mud. An English-speaking schooltea cher from a near-by town ralli ed a rescue squad to pry it loose. The Schreiders visited historic cities, hard-working villages, and maharajas' palaces. They inspected Chandigarh, the "cub ist," made-to-order Punjab cap ital. They camped out under starry Indian skies, and rode the Ganges' brown waters be tween banks of swarming life. Along their way, they saw a paradoxical land where beauty springs unexpectedly from pov- erty, and where earnest leaders : are creating a modern industrial, economy among people clinging to ancient ways and beliefs. They saw dams, power plants, and; steel mills rising in places where sacred cows amble at will along : streets and roads. At a Republic day festival in New Delhi, they watched a jet squadron swoop low over a pro cession in which elephants with painted faces and spear-carrying hunters from Assam trod close on tanks and armored cars. How Ganges Became Sacred The article's title, "From the Hair of Siva," goes back to an early Hiindu epic, the Ramay ana, which tells how the Ganges became sacred. Ruth Monning Phone 5-2167 Mr. and Mrs. W. N. McCory and Mr. and Mrs. Fawkes of Mound City, Mo. called on Mr. and Mrs. Frank Buell Saturday evening on their way home from the Nebraska-Missouri football game. Steven Churchill of Lincoln spent Thursday to Saturday p.m. at his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Creamer, on the farm. He made both trips on the bus. , Sunday guests at the Arthur Lorcnz home at- Hickman, Nebr. were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Duck worth and' Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Creamer. Sunday dinner guests at the home of Herb Hulfish Included Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hulfish of Lincoln, Mrs. Gordon Brooks of Chappell and Mr. and Mrs. Win. Coakley and son James of Plattsmouth. The occasion was a birthday dinner for Mrs. Belle Coakley and a complete sur prise to her. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. MarshaU'Whittemore, Oct. 31, in Lincoln, his name being Jeffrey Lee. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Whitte more and Great grandparent is Mrs. Nina Upton. According to -the legend, the goddess 'Ganga 'was ordered down to earth as a torrent of water in which to wash and pur ify the ashes of a group of ex ecuted princes. Fearing the des truction of a flood, Siva, one of the Hindu trinity, caught the water in his matted locks and let it seep out slowly. Thus all who bathe in the Ganges are be lieved to be cleansed of sin and to absorb the spiritual strength of the Hindu godhead. Tracing the river from its source to the great central city of Benares and on to the delta, the authors met pilgrims from all over India taking the ritual bath. Some brought ashes of family members to sprinkle into the water. Others filled bottles to carry home. The Americans made friends with a young Indian couple who were breaking with custom by marrying for love instead of letting their parents pick their mates. Yet at the wedding the Schreiders found bride and bridegroom carrying out pres cribed ancient ritual. And the time for the ceremony was set at 2 a.m. an hour chosen as auspicious by astrologers.
