Porter Saturday afternoon memorial services were held at the Cald- well-Linder funeral chapel for Howard R. Porther, who had died Wednesday at the family home in this city. The services were attended by a large num ber of old friends from this sec tion of Cass county. Rev. A. L. Embree, pastor of the First Methodist church of which Mr. Portre had been a member, officiated. Miss Bev erely George was soloist and Mrs. Twyla Hodge, organist for the service. - Interment was at Oak Hill cemetery with Ray Aylor, Bill Hansell, Norman Kellison, Char les Mendenhall, Edgar Newton and Arnold Schomaker, close friends serving as casket bear ers. Mrs. Mildred Newton, Mrs. Norma Kellison, Mrs. Margaret Carr, Mrs. Dorothea Roberts served as floral bearers. Mrs. Otto Lau, 75, Died at Denver EAGLE (Special) Mrs. Har ley Smith received word of the death of her sister-in-law Mrs. Ott,o Lau, 75 at a Denver hos pital Monday; Mrs. Lau -had had major surgery two months ago. Her husband, (Mrs. Smith s brother) has been confined to his bed, unable to recognize family or respond for several months at a nursing home. Mrs. Lau was a former teach er of a country school known as the Union School near Eagle, before her marriage. She was Ethel Gordon. Mrs. Born Is New President Of 4-Mile Club The Four-Mile Extension Club met Oct. 12 and held election of officers. They are: President, Mrs. Leonard Born; vice president, Mrs. Joe Bierl; secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Ever ett Parriott; treasurer, Mrs. William Starkjohn and news reporter, Mrs. Hugh Stander, Sr. Fifteen members met at the home of Mrs. Art Penke. Assist ant hostesses were Mrs. Fred Nolting and Mrs. Art Weiss. Mrs. Leland Meisinger and Mrs. Lyle Sparks gave the les son Parents and Purse Strings. It was decided to prepare a Christmas Basket and give to a needy family. A cradle shower was held for Mrs. George Born after the meeting. The hostesses served lunch. Next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Ralph Wehrbein. Five applications for member ship were read and eleven candi dates were initiated. They were Helen Alexander, Ethel Downey Mary Dowd, Mary Patricia Sampson, Marie Gearhart, Lou ella Gibson, Gladys Lehn, Gladys Kemp, Alberta Sherry, Carol Skelton and Margaret Taylor. Cecelia Lacz was initiated at North Omaha No. 38 District Meeting Oct. 18. An invitation was read from Fremont to their District Meet ing Nov. 6. Madam State President Velma Engelhaupt will make her of ficial visit to this Auxiliary Wed nesday, Nov. 2. Dorothy Janecek told of the visit of Grand Madam President Adaline Navarro to Nebraska at Kearney Oct. 17, and a gift being presented to her. The birthday raffle was won by Grace Sublett. Entertainment was enjoyed after the meeting. Camp Creek Club At Reynoldsons' EAGLE (Special) The Camp Creek Club met at Mrs. Rey noldson's home Tuesday after noon. The officers were re-elected for next year. The lesson on Home and Fam ily Protection was given by Mrs. Lucille Hardnock. Mrs. Wm. Malone the other leader could not be . present. Several visitors were present -Mmes. Page, Smith and Pistole nearby neighbors of Mrs. Rey noldson. The next meeting In Novem ber will be at Mrs. John Fis cher's home. Mmes. Mocroft and H. D. Eugene Mayfields Wed 48 Years GLENDALE (Special) Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mayfield held open house at their home in Omaha Oct. 16. Celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary. Eugene is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Mayfield former owner and editor of the Louisville Courier. .Mrs. May- field Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Eager. Both are graduates of Louisville High School. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Hirsch, Mrs. Letta Noyes and Mrs. Har old Koop of Louisville attended. dvjojca Mrs. Henry Maseman Mrs. Maude Ruhge received word this week of the death of Mrs. Lucy Morley Griffen, 87, at Passadena, Calif. She was the daughter of the late Rev. John and Mary Morley and lived here as a girl. Her brother was min ister of the Congregational Chur ch and lived east of Avoca, one sister Flora Morley survives. Burial was at Fowler City, Cali fornia. She was a sister of the late Ed and William Morley. Allen Hauschild has started a new house on his fathers farm south east of Avoca. Harold Dumke started a new house on the former Drury place recently purchased from Clyde Fletcher. A new furnace was installed at the Congregational parsonage this week. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ruhge en tertained the Veterans Card Club Tuesday night. Prizes at cards to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hallstrom and ! Two members, Mrs. Ber ner and Mrs. Carsten are of the original group. The others were, invited guests, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Young, Nebraska City were unable to be present as he is in the hospital. Mrs. Gordon Henegar form erly of the Sunny Hill Neigh borhood fell at her home in Weeping Water a week ago fracturing her hip. She was taken to Bryan Memorial Hos pital Lincoln where she had surgery the next day. Cdcd&A Mrs. Edward Van Horn Mrs. Reckard reports that a new great-granddaughter was born in Greenville, N.C., on their anniversary. There has not been a death in the Reckard family In their 62 years of married life. Every two years the Reckard boys and their families meet at the Reckard home for a fam ily reunion. All the boys but Paul of California were home in July and a number of the grandchildren. The family all attend church during this re union at the United Missionary Church In Weeping Water. Grubbs, Mrs Nels Petersen and Mrs. Herman Rauth spent Monday afternoon with Mrs. Rasmus Lauritzen, Sr. honoring her on her birthday. The guests brought the refresh ments. Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Rasmus Lauritzen, Jr. and Alice spent the evening at the Lauritzen home to help Mrs. Lauritzen again celebrate her birthday. She also received birthday calls from her children Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Lauritzen and family of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mrs. C. C. Craig of Oma ha and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lauritzen and family of Neligh. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gidley of Creston, Iowa and Mrs. Ida Cotner of Plattsmouth visited with Mrs. Minnie Parker and Mrs. L. F. Ehlers. Mr. and Mrs. Harlon Stock attended funeral services on Monday afternoon for August Kupke at Murdock. Phylliss Hohman was a Thurs day supper and evening guest of Carol Nickels. Shirley Upton was an evening guest. The girls all attended the high school get-together and weiner lunch at the schoolhouse as it was the night before homecoming. Ruth Hart and Esther Teftt were afterrnoon guests of Mrs. Arthur Jones. Mrs. Bert Philpot is visiting relatives and friends at Han over, Illinois this past week. He is s patient at the St. Elizabeth hos pital in Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rector and Irving Patter son visited him in the hospital Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Rector took Irving to Omaha Monday morning where he left by airplane for his home. Mr. Patterson is getting along fine since ms attack. The above folks also called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Neely at Nebraska City, formerly of Unadilla, Nebr. The Stokes family are former Elm- wood residents. The Pleasant Hill club mem bers met at Mrs. George Alt house's home on Tuesday af ternoon 18th. The afternoon was spent visiting and enjoying a neighborhood fellowship. Sev eral, of the younger ladies are employed at Lincoln, and can not attend. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Muen chau accompanied by her 2 sis ters, Mmes. Merte Fuelling and son James, of Rockport, Mo. and Helen Copple and son of Alvo, Nebr., attended the funer al services of the Mme"s. uncle, at Albion, Nebr. on Tuesday af ternoon. A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Rex Smettes of Goehner, at the Seward Memorial Hos pital, Oct. 18. Maternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eldee Mc Kay and son Ellis, visited Wed nesday evening at the hospital. The Smettes' now have two boys and two girls. Mr. and Mrs. William Malone enjoyed a trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., leaving on last Wednesday moiyiing, also visi ted friends at Boulder, Colo., attending the Colorado-Nebraska game on Saturday after noon, before returning home. muAdock Mrs. Ella C.
