Glenn Cunningham WASHINGTON, D.C. (Special By the time you read this, the Republican nominees for President and Vice President will probably be selected. This should put some colum nists at ease, for they have been .running around themselves, fill ing their allotted space with some strange predictions and conclusions. Perhaps the most unusual was one which appear ed in a Washington paper: . "If Henry Cabot Lodge (U.S. Ambassador to the U. N.) runs I for Vice President, he will not be appointed Secretary of State." The Post Office Department has had marked success In its continuing efforts to have peo ple put a return address on their envelopes. One big boost for the Department's campaign was convincing the etiquette book authors such as Amy Van derbilt and Emily Post that they should recommend return addresses on social correspon dence. The Post Office now estimat es that 92 per cent of letters contain a return address, up considerably from 10 and 20 years ago. The story is told in Washing ton of the Senator who was cam paigning around his state. He spoke to every conceivable au dience under any and all con ditions. One day he spoke at an auc tion of used farmmachinery, and the only podium from which he could see and be seen was a manure spreader. He began his speech with these words: "Fellow Americans, I've cam paigned the length and breadth of this State J I've met the peo ple everywnere. But this is the first time I have spoken on my opponent's platform." Four former Omahans are now Representatives: Ray J. Madden now repre sents Gary, Ind., but served as an Omaha municipal judge in 1916 and earlier received his law degree from Creighton Un iversity. Walter H. Judd is now from Minneapolis but was born in Rising City, Neb., and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and the medical college in Omaha. He and Madden are both serving their ninth terms in the House. Gerald R. Ford was born in Omaha but moved to Michigan as a boy. He is now from Grand Rapids and serving his sixth term. Robert R. Barry was also born in Omaha: He now repre sents Yonkers, N. Y., and is in his first term. Other lawmakers have Ne braska ties: both Senator Gale McGee (Wyo:) and Represen tative jonn K.yi uowa) spent many years in our State. Rer resentative Wayne Aspinall of Colorado married Julia Kuns of Lincoln more than 40 years ago. He is now chairman of the In terior Committee.
