Chile, recently rocked by earthquakes, measures 2,650 miles long but has an aver age width of only 110 miles. Larger than Nevada, Utah, and Idaho combined, Chile covers 286,000 square miles. Is lands account for a sixth of its area. To the frustration of beach-lovers, most of Chile faces the Pacific with steep cliffs unbroken by slifping shor es or curving bays.
