'Easter Parade' Began in Early Christian Days The first Easter Parades weren't the fashion shows Irv ing Berlin wrote about, but the celebration of a "new life." The custom of wearing new clothes on Easter Sunday dates from the early days of Christ ianity, when newly baptized Christians were clothed in gar ments of white linen. Researchers with World Book Encyclopedia report the bap tism" has1, always been closely associated with Easter. Just as the Resurrection represents the new life of Christ, so baptism represents, the initiation of the believer into a new life. In the early Church, Lent was the annual season of prepara tion for baptism, and the sac rament was celebrated on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil. Eventually all Christians be gan to dress up for a joyful par ade through town. . .much to the joy of today's clothing manufacturers. In fact, It might have been an early advertising executive who coined the English rhyme, "At Easter let your clothes be new or else be sure you will it rue " Vacation from Tarkio Tarkio, Mo.
