The (stima'i'd rnip of Leap Year Day bahte.s - based on c( ti.su-i estimates --- joined ll.'i.(MH) other Americans whose birthday entries only once every li ir' years. Many may consider this a minor tragedy. Several famous people have bet n bo; a on Feb. including Ann Lee, founder of ti e Shaker sect, and the Ital ian oncra composer, Gioacchi 10 Icossini. At 72, Rossini celebrat ed what lie termed his 18th birthday and facetiously an nounced that he planned to turn over a new leaf and abandon the frivolities of youth. Kossini, (Albert Miscalculated A"tuaKy Rossini was a year youneer bv th' calendar than: he thought, because 18(i0 was not a leap year. W. S. Gilbert made a similar miscalculation in the "Pirates of Penzance," j whose olot concerns a pirate's1 apprentice born on Leap Day. j The rule is that every year represented by a number divis ible by 4 is a leap year, ex'-ept those divisible by 100 but not 400. Thus 2000 will he a k-n 1 year, but. 1300 and 1000 were not. The calendar oddities arose because the earth does not ro around the sun in an exact num ber of days. The ancient Egyp- tians calculated that it took about 36.) '4 days a figure i remarkahl , closo to the modern estima'e of 3G5 days, 5 hours, 48 miuttcs, and 45.51 seconds. C. assigned 365 days to normal years, with an extra day added to every fourth year. Julius quite naturally added the odd day to February, which then was tlv last month of the year. The old Roman year be fan in March, which explains how September (seventh mon th, October (eighth month 1, November 1 ninth month 1, and December ueuth month) got their names. At lust Julius's calendar worked well enough. But by the 16th century, the calendar year had gained so much on the solar year that spr ng was coming in early March instead of on the March 21 equinox. Pone Greg ory XIII (1502-1585) dropped 10 days from the year, decreeing lhat henceforth leap years should be omitted in all century years not divisible by 4C3. Reforms Proposed Even with this refinement, a drift of more than a week may occur by A. D. 10,000.
