Janet Campbell, Mary Ann Bergmann, Mary Iverson, Kar lene Senf, Mary Ann Ryan and Jane Fauquet were nominated as candidates for King Korn Karnival Kween. Ground was broken for the County Historical Society Mus eum west of the theater build ing on a lot given the Society by the late T. H. Pollock and family. William Schmidtmann was re elected president of the Volun teer Fire Department. Fred Herre was appointed to the School Board to fill the term of Steve Davis who resign ed due to press of business. Plattsmouth schools - placed 3rd in State Fair Art Exhibits. The year, 1959, was acclaim ed a "banner year in home building in Plattsmouth." Mary Ann Ryan of Platts mouth was selected King Korn Karnival Kween and Dr. Herb ert Worthman of Louisville as Karnival King. Margaret Lepert won the Kar. nival Korn Show sweepstakes. Ivan Althouse was re-elected chairman of the Cass County ASC Committee. OCTOBER Lamm Manufacturing, fash ioning women's apparel, became a new Platstmouth business. Second Pleasant Hill Addi tion, 21 residential lots in South west Plattsmouth, was admit ted to the city. The Chester Stone family of Nehawka was honored as Cass County's Soil Conservation A ward winner for 1959. St. John's Roman Catholic Church celebrated Its 100th an niversary. Plattsmouth County Club was incorporated, is to develop a 9-hole golf course on 60 acres northwest of the city. NOVEMBER Dorothy Farris and Albert Dasher were named queen and king of Homecoming at Platts mouth High. Cub Scouts had biggest in duction class, 16 boys. Objection by property owners killed proposal to install sani tary sewer in Lincoln Avenue. Party gave Fr. Robert Hodg son, St. Luke's Episcopal rec tor, sendoff to National Cook out championship finals at Wai kiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii. Floyd Althouse, Eagle, was named chairman and Alvin Oeh lerking, Murdock, vice chair man of the Cass County Com mittee for Reorganization of School Districts. Eagle High finished 9-0, Cass County's only undefeated foot ball team. Year's rainfall of 31.05 inch es (rain only, not snow) set record for recent years. DECEMBER Alvo voted "yes", Murdock "no" on a proposal to merge the Alvo, Murdock and Elm wood school districts. Work began on golf course. Cornpicking was completed, one of the latest harvests on record in this area. Plattsmouth was placed in Class B in basketball and track by State School Activities As sociation. Sen. Ed McIIugh of Murdock called for special Legislative session to deal with highway program after State Engineer Roy Cochran resigned. Dorothy Farris and Arlan Cun. dall were named FHA Sweet heart and FFA King. Christmas was gray and snow less. The next day was balmy as spring, almost shirt-sleeve weather. Intermittent rain, with just a bit of sleet, the night after Christmas began to dampen the weekend. Then, it turned to snow and blizzard conditions prevailed for a time. Platts mouth got a couple inches of snow. More dire things were forecast but failed to material ize. The city street crew had its first snow removal workout of the season, did a good job and drew several compliments, in cluding a pat on the back from the City Council. H. M. Soennichsen, Platts mouth businessman for more than 70 years, died at 93. He was founder of Soennichsen's groc ery and drygoods store and had been a community leader for many years. He had also served as city clerk, city treasurer, county assessor and member of the Board of Education. -Sheriff (Continued From Page One) mitted on nights, when, the pat rol was in action. COUNTY JAIL: The budget for the year 1959 - 1960 was set at $10,890. This is to cover the day clerk and half of the nights clerk's salary, building utilities and maintenance; and board of prisoners, their bedding, medi cal, etc. With half the year gone by $5,845.35 has been spent. The number of days 'layed out" in the jail during 1959 al most doubled previous years and is an all time high. During 1959 the jail was oc cupied 363 days out of the 365 days. Served out in jail were 1,942 days. This was almost dou ble the year of 1958 when 1,118 days were "layed out" in con finement. Major offenses committed which resulted in confinement in 1959 were; four for assault; for check offenses, 28; for breaking and entering, 29; for drunken driving, 41; for lar ceny, 31; for auto theft, 5, for rape, 3; and for armed robbery, one. AUDIT OF BOOKS: A mem ber of the State Auditor's office made his yearly audit of the sheriff's office and jail records and came with in 65 cents of balancing out and this was in "favor of the sheriff." Police Court Notes Police activities at mid week have been in the line of traffic violations the docket at Judge J. H. Graves office in the city hall discloses. Dennis L. Todd, charged with operating a motor vehicle in a careless manner and making a "U turn" on Main street. Hear ing set for January 4th. Charles Grosshans, charged with speeding. Hearing set for January 7th. Ralph Younker, charged with speeding. Hearing set for Jan uary 7th. Larry Meisinger, charged with blocking sidewalk at Wimpy 's inn. Testimony of the defendant and police officers as to the blocking was conflicting, the de fendant contending that there was room on the walk for pedes trians to pass. Police testimony was that the sidewalk was block ed and plenty of parking space available elsewhere. After hear ing th evidence the court gave a fine of $5 and costs. ROADIIOISE Ottawa, Ont. For almost two years, Mrs. Blanche Tou chette lived in a house in the middle of a road without know ing it. The land was set aside years ago for a road that was never built. Mrs. Touchette dis covered this fact when she tried to sell her house. Now she wants1 the authorities to sell her the land. I Death of Mrs. Lura Belle Spiegel Here at Family Home Mrs. Lura Belle Spiegel, died at the family home, 1018 Patter son avenue, in the south part of the city, Tuesday following an illness of three years. She was born October 20, 1902 at Westboro, Mo., daughter of George and Rhoda Baxter Sta ten, spending her childhood years in that community. On April 9, 1922 at Rock Port, Mo., she was married to Woelber Spiegel, who survives her passing-Other survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Leland McNulty, Council Bluffs, la.; four grand children, Charles, Cheryl, Alan and Nancy; three brothers, Carl Staten, Hopkins, Mo.; George Staten, Lincoln; Robert Staten, Shenandoah, la. She was pre ceded in death by the parents and one sister. Mrs. Spiegel formerly resided in Tarkio, Mo., attending the Tarkio high school and also the state teachers college at Marys ville, Mo. She taught school for one year. The family came to Platts mouth in 1942. Mrs. Spiegel was a member of the United Presbyterian church at Tarkio during her residence in the Missouri city. Funeral services will be Sat urday January 2, 1960 at 2 p.m. at the Sattler funeral home with burial at Oak Hill cemetery in this city. Visiting hours will be Friday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the chapel of the Sattler funeral home. Bend re sidents, he was the Burlington R. R. agent until time of his re tirement when they moved to California.
