THE PLATTSMOUTH. NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Monday, October 12, 1959 PAGE SEVEN This 'n That In Agriculture Tests at the University of Nebraska Agriculture Experi ment Station indicate that corn dried with artificial heat not ex ceeding 190 degrees makes good cattle feed. Digestion trials showed no significant differences between lots of corn dried naturally as compared with that dried by ar tificial heat at temperatures of 130, 160 or 190 degrees. The studies indicated that there was no nutrient loss in heat dried corn nor less in di gestibility of rations containing heat dried corn. All Nebraska farmers are be ing asked to take an active part in a statewide cornpicker safety campaign this fall. And you'll have the most ac tive role to play in this cam paign, because you will be oper ating the picker, safely or other wise, says Delbert Lane, Exten sion agricultural engineer at the University of Nebraska. Full cooperation of newspaper, radio station and television sta tion editors will be sought to bring the message of cornpicker safety into every Nebraska farm home. Each year hundreds of farm ers all over the country are kill ed, Injured or maimed for life In cornpicker accidents. These ac cidents are extremely costly In mony, loss of time and suffering by the farmer and his family. Don't let your name be listed on the cornpicker accident re port for 1959. Clarence Schmad eke, County Extension Agent. CGpitoLJNews By Melvin Paul Statehouse Correspondent The Nebraska Press Association LINCOLN There has been a lot of talk about investigations in the capital city. The highway department, purchasing department and mental hospitals all have had a taste of it. Reports are that Gov. Ralph G. Brooks is considering nam ing a committee of state sen ators to lock into highway de partment operations. . Sen. Terry Carpenter, of Scot tsbluff apparently beat the gov ernor to the punch in announc ing this. But Carpenter's announce ment was far from complimen tary to the governor. He says Brooks has no bus iness naming senators to such a committee when the legisla ture itself voted against such a probe. Also, Carpenter says the pro poised investigation is design ed to throttle him. The Seotts bluff senator says he has been looking into the department and will have a few things to say about it himself. Fred Herrington.a Republican, kicked off a gubernatorial in quiry into state purchasing practices. In a letter to purchasing agent A. Clifford Anderson, a; Democrat, the tax commission- i er ordered his personal clear-1 ance of any purchases above : $35 which were not let for bids, j Herrington says he has re-; ceived complaints that certain ! with state business without sub-; mitting bids. j Involved in the controversy ; are some chairs in the gover-; nor's office, in the mansion and j some desks in the motor ve-! hide department. Governor Brooks ordered ' an immediate study of state ; buying practices. j Superintendents cf the three state mental hospitals were cal led before the governor to tigh-: ten custody of sexual psycho-' paths. The governor was told by the : superintendents that 18 sexual psychopaths have escaped from the three state hospitals and have never been heard of since. Thirteen fled from the Lin coln .state Hospital, two. from Hastings and three from Nor- folk. j The governor heard Board of j Control Chairman Charles Le-i eman charge that law enforce ment agencies apparently do not follow through when the escapes are reported. The governor told the bou:d j to either get the personnel to guard the sex putins or place them back in the penitentiary where there is maximum secur ity. One suggestion that evolved from the meeting was that such inmates would be photograped and fingerprinted thus giving law enforcement agencies ano ther tool with which to work to capture escaped sex criminals. Brooks said his inquiry was triggered by an escaped Kans- . as sex psychopath who assault ed a six-year-old Lincoln gjrl. The man is now awaiting trial in Lincoln. Gas Tax Funds Nebraska counties received $756,558 as their share of the September gasoline and special fuel tax take. Another $472,848 went to the counties for improvement of rural-star mail routes. Distribution of the $3,888,681 gasoline tax and special fuel tax was announced by the state treasurer. Highway Allocation Federal authorities have an nounced that Nebraska will re ceive $29,225,000 in federal aid highway funds this year. State Engineer Roy Cochran says the $15,324,000 allocated for the Interstate highway Is about one-third the $47 million that has been available in the past. Interstate funds are matched on a 90-10 basis with the state putting up the 10. The state's allocation for fed eral aid primary, federal aid secondary and federal aid ur ban funds Is $13,901,00. Idle Funds About $1.5 million in Idle state funds has been taken out of Nebraska banks and invest ed in federal securities. That's the report from State Treasurer Richard Larsen. There was some $4.5 million idle money In 290 banks when Larsen announced earlier in. the year that he would take those funds ard invest them, witlr-iitterfst going to the state general fund. Dividends from the Invest ments have ' ranged from 3.75 to 5 per cent, Larsen says.
