Alfalfa Is Deathtrap For Pheasant LINCOLN Alfalfa. the pheasant hen's favorite nesting cover, is a deathtrap for her and her brood. On 93 acres of mowed alfal fa searched on the Game Com mission's Harvard Studv Area in the past weeks, biologists found 131 pheasant nests, or 1.42 nests per acre. Only four nests, or three per cent, were successful. In addition. 11 dead hens were counted, five more had one foot mowed off and one had a wing severed. Farming operations in alfal fa spell almost 100 per cent doom for pheasant nests in most cases, as the birds are not able to complete their nesting activ ities between mowings. A survey, carried out in 1958 on seven square miles on the Harvard area, compared, var ious types of cover for nesting and brood success. Wheat fields accounted for 69 per cent of the total production of pheasant chicks, although alfalfa had the greatest number of nests. Roadsides, fence rows, unus ed land and alfalfa cover tvpes had the highest nest density per acre. Of 174 nests found, 11 had eggs which hatched. Av erage clutch size was 10. Predators destroyed 21 per cent of all nests, farming oper ations 35 per cent and burning 21 per cent. One hen on a road side nest was killed by a mam alian predator. On nests des troyed by farming operations, 11 per cent of the hens were killed. Of 208 eggs in 19 success ful nests, at least 94 per cent were fertile. An average of 9 eggs was hatched from each successful nest. Average brood size was 6. Hatching peak occurred June 8 to 14. Chick mortality from time of hatching to six weeks of age was 36 per cent. Home Is Where The Nest Is LINCOLN A little clucking, a little rearranging and home is ready for the eggs. Roomers in the basement can be tolerat ed with a pre-fabricated house Muskrat houses in Sand Hills lakes are serving two occupants this spring. Game Commission biologists are reporting that some of the dens have duck nests on top of them. No neighborly spats have developed as yet. WEDS TO WIN A WAGER Los Angeles Appearing In court, pretty Anita June Jack son, 19, said her husband, Rex, 25, left her after their marriage ceremony. She said that three days later he met her on th street, told her he had married her to win a bet at a party and added: "Why worry You 're not hurt." Mrs. Jackson won an annul ment of her marriage. M. D. Weldon, Extension ag ronomist, says these "prescrip tions" are part of the Wiscon sin Pacemakers Corn program which has helped boost average corn yields about 20 bushels per acre in the state in the past seven years. An individual "prescription" is written for each farmer par ticipating in the program. This is based on a soil test of his fields, plus other Information in cluding the previous cropping history of the field and the soil treatments he has previously used. This prescription includes mainly the fertilizer recommen dation; also suggestions on weed and insect control, til lage methods and other factors. The value of these prescrip tions was shown last year, say Weldon, when, in spite of wide spread drought, Pacemaker farmers produced corn yields averageing 102 bushels per ac re, as compared with a state wide average of 58'2 bushels. Weldon says maximum prof its on corn per acre depend on a low cost unit of production. This can be achieved by using the most profitable amounts of fertilizer per acre, he says. He reports that some farm ers in the Pacemakers program have produced corn for as lit tle as 45 cents per bushel. Young Turkeys Are Sighted Near Crawford CRAWFORD Several hens of Nebraska's nucleus preeding stock of Merriam's wild tur keys have been observed with their young this spring by ran chers and Game Commission personnel. Mrs. Art Zarek of near Craw ford reported flushing two hens and possibly 20 young turkeys June 18. The group scattered at her approach, the young tak ing to the trees while the hens circled about, coaxing them down one by one. The broods were about one month old. The previous week, Ed Oster meyer of near Crawford report ed that two hens he had seen frequently were no longer in evi dence and that only the toms were seen. Apparently the hens were sitting on their nests. During the past winter, 28 wild-trapped Merriam's turkeys were obtained from the Wyo ming and South Dakota game and fish departments. Twenty birds were planted in the Cot tonwood Creek area, northwest of Crawford. The others were transplanted in Deadhorse Can yon, southwest of Chadron. The wild turkey, one of nature's most wily game birds, was once native to Nebraska. If the present breeding stock Is able to maintain and repro duce itself, Nebraskans may have some added hunting on their already diversified hunt ing schedule. The birthday of the U.
