THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Thursday, May 7, 1959 . PAGE SEVEN (SAPDYOIL (engressman GLENN CUNNINGHAM The Jamestown Colonists tried socialism and nearly starved. Now, after 350 years, we seem to be trying it again. For every conceivable human problem, the planners and subsidizers are stepping in with the thinking that a law is always the answer to any problem. When former Illinois Governor Adlal Stevenson vetoed a bill designed to protect bird life by forbidding cats to roam about, he said: "The problem of cat versus bird is old as time. If we attempt to resolve it by legislation, who knows but what we may be called upon to take sides in the age old problem of dog versus cat. "Inl my opinion, the State of Illinois already has enough to do without trying to control fe. line delinquency." - With Memorial Day and Flag Day approaching, you may be wondering whether the 48-star flag or 49-star flag should be dis played. In fact, if you have a flag with 13 stars, it would still be considered proper for display as long as it is in good condition. It Is likely that the 50-star flag will become official o: July 4, 1960. 0 Treasury Secretary Robert An' derson said recently, "To ignore the obligation of paying off some part of our debt during prosper ous times is contrary to all of our American traditions of good faith and performance. Failure to reduce our debt when we can means passing on the problems I of the debt to another genera tion, wnicn we nave no moral., right to do." 0 U. S. population May 1, includ ing servicemen overseas, is es timated at 176,213,000. I have a limited supply of "Washingtons Farewell Add ress." It ia one of the great state papers of American history. I would like to distribute them to persons who would like to read them or use them in school work. Please write me at Room 1523, New House Office Building, Washington 25, D. C. for a copy. Traffic Safety Quiz Are you one of those guys who says, "A couple of drinks don't bother my driving a bit?" Well, let's see just exactly how much you actually do know about drinking and driving. 1. Strong black coffee will off set most of the effects of alcohol. True or false? 2. Just two drinks may reduce your visual "sharpness" greatly. True or false? 3. People who take two or three drinks (social drinkers) and then drive a car are a bigger problem than out-and-out drunk drivers. True or false? 4. During the Christmas holi days, about one out of four driv ers involved in a fatal auto ac cident has had something to drink. True or false? 5. ' About one out of five adult pedestrians killed has been " drinking. True or false? Answers: 1. False. Coffee or other sti mulants, the National Safety Co uncil says, will not offset the ef fects of alcohol. "Only time," it says, "can eliminate alcohol from the blood stream." 2. True. According to the American Medical Assn., two cocktails may reduce your vis ual acuity as much as :f you were wearing dark glasses at night. "Imagine," the Council says, "trying to drive at night wearing dark glasses. " 3. True. "As a group, social drinkers can be a greater pro blem than obvious drunks," the Council says. Why? "There are more social drinkers and they're harder to detect. When a drunk gets behind the wheel of a car, he usually attracts attention be cause his actions are so pro nounced others notice his im pairment. The social drinker, however, usually is able to es cape detection until an emer gency gets him into trouble." 4. False. Not one out of four closer to one out of two, accord ing to the Council. This is al most twice as high as the an nual average. 5. True. The exact percentage in recent years has been about 22. And during the Christmas, 1957,-holiday period, a Council study shows, more pedestrians were killed in the first hour than in any other hour during the period. "There are a lot of misconcep tions concerning drinking and driving," the Council says. Smart drivers know you don't have to be drunk to be dangerous." Subscribe to The Journal Now I
