Clinton Belknap, Lincoln, East Nebraska Representative for the March of Dimes organization, stated that "If developments in certain southern and coastal sta tes are to be taken as an indi cator, the nation may be headed for some real polio trouble in the summer months ahead. He cited numerous instances of increase in new polio this year as against last as recorded in a recent U. S. Public Health Ser vice report: Texas 42 as against only 24 to the 'iame date last year; Louisiana 12 and 6; Ar kansas 13 and 6; Mississippi 12 and 3; Florida 37 and .24; West Virginia 12 and 4; California 50 and 42 and Missouri 26 as against onlv 1 to the same date in 1958. Increased incidence of polio in an epidemic year nave almost always started first in the south ern and coastal states," Belknap rnmmented. "and later spread to the central areas of the nation. Polio eoidemics in Detroit, New Jersey, Virginia, Montana and Hawaii in 1958 were omens oi what can happen across the co untry this year if people contin ue to neglect getting their Salk Vaccine," Belknap stated. "It seems incredible." said he, "that four years after Salk Vaccine became available there should he so many still unprotected!" "To date Nebraska has record ed only 3 new cases of diagnosed polio in 1959," said Belknap, "but we would do well to remember that the state had reported only 27 to June 28 in 1952 and then wound up the year with a total of 2252 and 110 deaths. Hundreds of 1952 victims are still requiring costly care and treatment!" With the polio season fast ap proaching, the U. S. Public Heal th Service estimates that 98 mil lioan Americans still have not had a single shot of Salk Vac cine. Two Americans in three continue needlessly to risk their lives because they have not yet obtained the full protection af forded by the Salk shots, Belk nap said. Nationally, the greatest lag seems to be among adults and pre-school children although thousands upon thousands of school age boys and girls are still completely unprotected. Belknap stated that the first two shots of Salk Vaccine in the regular three shot series are given about 1 month apart with the third shot following the se cond by about seven months. "It thus takes about 8 months to complete the series," said Belk nap, "and time is a wasting!" guests, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Richman of Battle Creek, la., and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Boiler and Susan of Lincoln visited Mrs. Gertrude Boiler in her home after the wedding, Mrs. Richman is Mrs. Boiler's sister.
