The Elmwood Garden Club met at the home of Mrs. F. M. Kobb Feb. 10 The lesson on "Trees" was directed by Mrs. Emily Gon zales. Mrs. Harry Under ent helps from Colorado. Some of the topics were these: Indoor planting of seeds, To the Way iaier, Trees" by Joyce Kilmer; Legend of the Dogwood; Beau ties of Colorado; Pruning; Trees grow ing in Gotham. Shrubs such as Japanese Quince can be cut and brought in the house to bloom. Susie Cook brought pus.sy wil low and forsythia in bloom. The year's work was planned. The Ermund Steiner family were Sunday guests at the Wall ace Glantz home. The Steiner family occupy the Nellie Patton house. Maxine Eidenmiller of Lincoln .spent Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Eidenmiller and also made sev eral other calls on relatives and friends. Mrs. Eldro Patton drove from Lincoln Wednesday to visit her mother who Is in a wheel chair at present since falling and breaking bones in a foot. Mrs. Clarice Krall was hostess to the members of the Legion Auxiliary at her home. There were 11 present. On Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Fred Engleking planned a little party for her uncle Louis Her mann's 81st birthday. She in vited 8 of his friend3. They play ed games and reminisced. A beautiful heart shaped cake was the centerpiece of the table. Strawberry shortcake was serv ed. Mrs. Clarence Bucknell put a quilt in last Friday. Her quilt ing friends will enjoy helping her get it done. The EUB Christian, Methodist and Murdock EUB churches ob served World Day of Prayer Feb. 13 at the Methodist church. Con sidering the weather, attend ance was good. Mrs. Frank Buell is recovering from a hard attack of the flu. It seems a great many people have been having flu or had colds. Mr. and Mrs. Herold Krecklow David and Dafe'called on their friends in Lincoln, Sunday, Mr., and Mrs. Paul Henn and were guuests for supper at the Arn old Schleifert home near Wa bash. The ladies of the Christian church announce they served the largest crowd so far at their annual smorgasbord last Satur day night. People came from all the towns around. Mrs. Shir ley Wenzel and Mrs. Norma Hall are co-presidents. Mrs.. Orval Phone 5-2167 Miller and Skyle Miller Jr. are the "Events" committee. They have already set up the whole year's plan. They plan a food sale, mother-day after banquet, ice cream social, sausage and pancake supper, climaxed by a harvest festival. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lake of Lincoln and Mr. and Mrs. Span cer Leger of Lincoln drove down to attend the smorgasbord Sat. night. Mrs. W. S. Powers cf Weep ing Water spent the weekend with her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Horton. The Modern Mothers met at the home of Mrs. Grace Alt house, Thursday. Their program was a book review "The Day Christ Died" given by Mrs. Earl Horton. They all enjoyed this a great deal. Callers Sunday afternoon at the home of Maud and Jessie Creamer were Mr. and Mrs. Ar thur Rledesel, Paul, Gordon and Anita of Ashland. The Legion Auxiliary are spon soring a house to house drive for the "Heart Fund" on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 22. Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Laura Hollenbeck were her dau ghter and husband, the Don Erik-on's of Omaha. Visiting at the Harry Arnold home from Thursday evening to Monday morning, were Mrs. Arnold's brother, Mr. Elmer Coe of Visalia, Cal. and her sister Miss Hattle Coe of Lincoln. Mr. Cce usually visits here once each year. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rawson, Tommy and Ricky of Lexington, Nebr. visited her parents, Mr. and Mr3. Skyle Miller Jr. Sat urday and attended the smor gasbord at the Christian church. Mrs. Hershel Reynolds (Jane Shreve) returned from Ft. Ruc ker, Ala., where she spent 3 weeks with her husband, Sat urday. On March 7th he will go to Presidio, near San Francis co where he will spend 2 years. Jane and the girls will remain here with her parents until school is out for the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Clark Gonzales called on Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Maggie Seikman of Eagle Sun day afternoon and spent the evening at the Lester Rosenow home. The young folks who attended the Christian Vocation Confer ence at the First Methodist church, Lincoln, Friday after noon to Sunday afternoon were Gayle Miller, Diane Bornemeier, Sharon Charling, Sharon Fred enburg and Kathy Neilson. Some of the work was held on the Wesleyan Campus. In honor of Mrs. Swain Neil son's birthday, Saturday, Mr. Neilsen took her to Lincoln to "eat out." The people in the carriage at right rear must have reflected on that too as they watched the parade line up. One question which might be asked about the festooned car's par ticipation in the parade is, How did the driver manage to see where he was going? Fleischman and Emily Gonzales were Ash land visitors Monday A son was born Friday, Feb. 13th to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Vogt, The baby has a brother and a sister. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. .Vogt and Elmer visited Margaret, Mr. and Mrs Walkup, and Billy at York, Sunday. The Rev. Armin Vogt and family of Marquette called. Elmwood School News John Mendenhall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Mendenhall, has been accepted as the Elmwood representative for "Boys State." The Elmwood Pirates lost to the Palmyra basketball team by a score of 33 to 56. The grade school rooms all had valentine parties last Fri day. The grade school game with Unadilla was postponed until Feb. 27, because of the bad wea ther. Six weeks examinations were to be given this week. Elmwood plays in the district tournament at Walton next week. Mr. and Mrs. LaMoyne Spohn and Jolcne entertained on Sun day at a 5:30 dinner a group of students from the University of Nebraska. They were: Sharon Russell, Mitchell; Allen Christ ensen, Aurora; Stan Claussen, Randolph; Dale Thompson, Shenandoah; Deanne Enderi, Richard Schmeling, and Norman Shipherd, of Superior and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Pointer, Avoca. Later in the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Norris of Avoca, who recently enjoyed a trip of the state of Alaska, showed color slides of this trip. Mrs. Le Roy Haertel and Patty spent Thursday vith Mrs. Maertel's mother, Mrs. Walter Damme of Cook in honor of Mrs. Damme's birthday. Orville Sandy spent Saturday in Lincoln and was a visitor at the Duane Nelson home in the afternoon, and a Sunday dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Holmes in Ashland. Mrs. Clara Pershing assisted by Miss Lola Allen was hostesses to the Greenwood Woman's Club at the home of Mrs. Pershing Tuesday. Twelve members were present. The program was "World of New Ideas" in new material and room decorations. A dress leng th of material was given away and Miss Lola Allen drew the lucky number. Randy Stratton entertained the boys from his class in hon or of his birthday Feb. 10. The boys were Lee Towle, Tommy Dorr, Harlan McGuire, Harold McCoy, Junior Johnson, Bobby Bennett and Marty Zierott all from Murdock school. Mrs. Clara Pershing slipped and fell on ice in front of her home Friday afternoon. She was badly bruised and unable to walk but fortunatly no bones were broken. She is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Gene Robert sen in Lincoln for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Leesley cal led on Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Lottman and daughter of Lin coln Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Maughan and girls called on their daugh ter at the Lincoln General Hos pital Sunday evening. Mrs. Ben Howard underwent surgery at the Bryan Memorial hospital Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Singleton and Erma of Raymond spent Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hohenshell. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Bucking ham and family of Omaha spent the weekend at the D. E. Buck ingham home. Jolly Jokers Pinochle Club met Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Joe Marshall. The guests for those that were ab sent were Mrs. E. A. The banquet was honoring the honor students of Junior and Senior classes of Ashland High School. Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Osburn and Rodger and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Osburn and daughter were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bulling and Teddie.
