Sigvald Jensen, Scoutmas ter, announced the following coming events: Febr. 8 is Scout Sunday. The Cub and Boy Scouts their den mothers and leaders will attend church at the Me thodist in a body; Feb. 8-14 is Scout week and the Scouts are to wear their uniforms to school during the week and it is also the 49th anniversary of the Scouts; Feb. 18th at the Chris tian Church parlors will be the annual Blue and Gold Banquet for all the Cubs, their leaders and families of the Cubs. Jimmy Michelsen was pre sented with a Lion badge; Bon nie Patterson, denner stripe; Gerry Doyle, assistant denner stripe. Service stars went to Terry Doyle, Eric Aronson, Bert Marshall and Robbie King; Mer- bership cards to Jimmy Bender, Jimmy Nichols, Ronald Atkins, Ronnie Patterson, and Tommy Kunz. Johnnie Van Horn is a new member of the Cubs. The three dens each presented a skit on "Newsman" and a short little playlet was presented by Howard Heneger, Joe Bender, Lynn Rothe and Mr. Haines with Mrs. Clarence King as narrator. Ser ving on the kitchen committee were Mrs. Ted Cooper and Mrs. Vernon Dettmer.. York of Plattsmouth were at the Uni versity of Nebraska Saturday to see their son, Joe York, receive his Master in Education degree. Mrs. Joe York also attended the commencement. Joe is on the high school faculty here. Mrs. Margo Sailors and Mrs. Hilda Williams are attending the Nebraska Hairdressers Con vention in Omaha at the Hotel Fontenelle. The convention was in session Saturday through to day. Guest speaker today is Sen ator Carl Curtis. Miss Louise Berlett is also attending the convention. George Barr, long time resi dent of this city, Is at St. Mary's hospital in Nebraska City, being taken there on Friday. Mr. Barr has not been well since July and will undergo observation and treatment, braska. Mrs. Fern Hendricks, Omaha, attended the Cass County His torical Association luncheon and meeting at the Hotel Coffee Shop in Plattsmouth. Mrs. Hendricks also visited at the home of her son, Vern Hendricks, and fam ily. 90th Birthday Is Celebrated WEEPING WATER (Special) Nearly 100 guests attended the 90th birthday anniversary of Mary Smoots at the Abbuhl home, Jan. 8 at Palisade. Host esses were her daughters, Mrs. Ben Young, Mrs. Harold Har mon and Mrs. Ziba Abbuhl. Mrs. Margaret Romine served the cake. Granddaughters, Mrs. Dale Pugh and Jack Abbuhl poured. Mrs. Gerald Stock a granddaughter and Mrs. Zenas Decker and Mrs. Paul Ward as sisted. Mrs. Harmon went by train to Palisade to visit her mother, Mrs. Mary Smoots and her sis ter, Mrs. Abbuhl and another sister Mrs. Young of Madrid. Mrs. Harmon returned home as far as Shelton with Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Stock and came the rest of the way home by train. Richard Means Takes Job With Army Engineers Richard M. Means recently, re ceived his B. S. degree from col lege of mechanical engineering, University of Washington, Seat tle. Richard has accepted a job with the corps of army engineers and will be traveling a good deal this year. His address is Box 541, Route 3, Centralia, Wash. He graduated from Plat t s m o u t h High School in 1949 and served 4 years in the Air Force. ENS TOUCH Harold and Herman Zierott, well known residents of the Mur dock community, were in Platts mouth Thursday and while here called at the Journal to renew their subscriptions. They depart ed for Murdock as the blizzard struck this vicinity. Miss Jeannette Johnson of Lexington visited the past week with Miss Mary Sullivan. The girls are roommates while at tending the University of Ne- Loren Fleischman returned Friday from Fort Ord, Calif., where he has completed the last of his training with the mil itary service. He is now a mem ber of the army reserve and will be subject to the weekly drill re quirements. He is attached to th Heavy Weapons company of the 355th infantry location in this city. Sunday they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Plunkett Sr., of Weeping Water. Mrs. Ber tie Hicks went to Louisville to spend the week with the Rose Reddens. BENEFIT DINNER The net proceeds of the ben efit dinner Sunday at the audi- tourium was $538. Half of this will be contributed to the March of Dimes, one sixth to heart fund, one sixth to the cancer fund and one sixth to cerebral palsy fund. Approximately 475 dinners were served. Mrs. Elmer Ross and Mrs. Victor Ross were chairmen. The project was spon sored by the Junior Woman's club and they were assisted by many other organizations. Mr. and Mrs. Murell Whitting ton and family were guests Sat urday of her mother, Mrs. J. P. Elliot and Mr. Elliot at Oregon, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Schultz, Reserve, Kansas. Mrs. Dorothy French and children, Plattsmouth, were guests. Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. John Tyson. Mrs. French and two of her children were re cently injured in a car accident near South Omaha. They were badly shaken and bruised and cut. The E.U.B. fellowship met Sunday evening with Sandra and Lester Turner. They observed Youth Week by conducting the service at the U. B. church Sun day. The Aid will serve the lunch at the Frank Marler and Lester Dill farm sales Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sand and family, Lincoln, were dinner guests Sunday of the F. O. Sands. In the afternoon they visited Mr. and Mrs. Allen Har ris and family of Anchorage, Alaska who are visiting relati ves at Nebraska City. Jane Dietl came Thursday to spend her midsemester vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dietl. The second semester at Peru opened January 27. Wade Nutzman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Nutzman was nine years old Saturday. His evening dinner guests were Steve Han sen, Tom Schlichtemeier, Rich ard Stone and Dale Nutzman. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Scho maker, Mrs. Helen Weber and son, Scott, all of Lincoln were recent dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Nutzman and family and observed the birthday of Mrs. Weber. Mrs. Nancy Sutton, Cass county home agent gave the les son. There were many original and attractive designs. Mrs. Sut ton displayed a number of artic les wnicn could be made of tile and had pictures of others. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Lacy and Bonita were guests Sunday even ing at a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs1. Calvin C. Carsten of Avoca. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Murdoch and Mrs. Maude Philpot were guests over the weekend of Mr. and Mrs. Glen McAffee and fam ily of Fullerton, Nebr. Satur day they visited Mrs. Henning Johnson and Vivian Schomaker at St. Mary's hospital. Relatives surprised Mrs. Ned Nutzman on Tuesday morning when they met at her home to observe her birthday. He was a World War II veteran and attended Los Angeles univer sity, George Washington Univ ersity and the department of ag. riculture graduate school. Over 200 attended the chili supper sponsored Monday eve ning at the chool by the home making girls. The quilt made by the home making girls has been com pleted and given to a needy fam ily of the community. Each girl made a block for the quilt and the ladies of the United Breth ren Church quilted it. He came under the auspices of the state depart ment and was brought here from Bellevue by Mr. and Mrs. Krug er. Coming from Italy he was interested in the rural and town schools of this section of the country. The Future Farmers of Amer ica made a trio to Omaha Tues day to tour the stock yards and Swift packing plant. They also visited the livestock broadcast by Hart Jorgenson.
