Wednesday; NEWS FROM AVOCA Mrs. Henry Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Ballance, Eagle, announce the engagement of their daughter Sally to Stan ley Emshoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Emshoff of Avoca. They plan a March 10 wedding. IIolv Trinity Guild met Tues day with Mrs. George Meyer. A committee was appointed to help with the polio, heart and cancer drive. It was voted to give $5 to the Cass County and Otoe County chapters. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Linhardt and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kirk hoff were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ruhge. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gregg announce the birth of a dau ghter, Barbara Jo, at St. Mary's hospital Jan. 7. Mrs. Maude Ruhge is the grandmother. They have a son and daughter. The Women's Fellowship of the Congregational Church met Thursday in the church parlors with Mrs. Martha Ruhge and Mrs. Calvin Carsten. Bertha Neumeister, president, gave the two retiring officers, Mrs. J. H. F. Ruhge and Mrs. Earl Freeman, a rose for their past work. Mrs. Elmer Hen nings installed the new officers. Mrs. Bertha Neumeister, presi dent; Mrs. Ernest Emshoff. vice president; Mrs. Henry Mase man, secretary; Mrs. Louis Ruh ge, treasurer and all the com mittee heads. They were given a carnation for their future work. The birthday song was sung for the January members. Mrs. Neumeister presented her members who had perfect at tendance for 1958 with a gift. They are Mrs. J. W. Brendle and Mrs. Minnie Neumeister. Next meeting will be a work basket shower and new plans were made for a pancake feed Shrove Tuesday. Several members were also appointed to help with the pol io, heart and cancer benefit on Jan. 31. Tuesday evening several went to the Glenn Stubbendick home for his birthday. Mrs. Orville Cornell received word of the serious illness of her father at Port Arthur, Tex She left to be with him for sur gery. Friends gathered at the Er nest Haveman home Thursday evening for cards. Prizes went to Mrs. Roy Ruhge, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hennings and Allen Ehlers. Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Kirkhoff and Shane Mark entertained at a dinner honoring Cheryl Lynn on her 5th birthday Sun day. The First Lutheran Chruch had Its annual meeting Jan. 12. Elected were Melvin Ommen to fill vacancy of Maynard Rip pe, secretary; Ellis Liesemey er, southwest district: Roy Ber ner, southeast district, and Al bert Bose. northeast district. Sunday school has an enroll ment of 214, 19 regular teach ers and 16 associate teachers, one new senior class was add ed. Senior choir members are Mrs. William Brandt, Henry Grafe, Leonard Brinkhoff. Car olyn Nutzman and Marcia Om men, librarians. Mrs. Leonard Nutzman is director and Mary Ann Leefers, organist. During the year there were 15 baptisms, 21 confirmations, 4 funerals. 2 weddings. Word was received here Fri day of the death of Mrs. Ed (Sophie) Schutz of Otoe, well known here at a Lincoln Hospit al of a heart attack Friday. Mr. and Mrs. John Meyer moved Wednesday to a farm south of Syracuse. Mrs. Fred Haveman Jr. was taken to Brvan Memorial Hos pital Thursday by ambulance. Elmore Vance is a patient at Syracuse Community hospital. Herman Dankleff fell at his 6:30 p.m. Mariners Club Sup per and Installation of officers. 7:30 p.m. Sr. Hi Fellowship.
