Elm Grove-- (Continued from Page 1 wood had as fine a fair as any small town, consiting ofall kinds of exhibits with horse racing, and bicycle racing also many prominent speakers such as J. Sterling Morton and Wm. J. Bryan were here also. We also had two newspapers, the first one in 1886 was the "Echo" edited by A. W. May field. In 1891 the "Leader" was started by Dick Barr. In 1896 they were combined, under one name "Elmwood Leader Echo" by Bert Clements. The business men of Elmwood formed a park association and rented land from C. D. Clapp for a park in 1906. This held a prominent place in the town as all public affairs were held here. From the beginning Elmwood was an independent village. It had its own telephone exchange, which consisted of several on one line and was owned by the I town. Later it had a central of fice which was handled by James Woodarrl. Later it was sold to the Plattsmouth Telephone Co. It is now served by the Lincoln Telephone Co. It had its own gas plant which furnished lights for the town, later an electric light plant was built. It is now fur nished lights by the Omaha Public Power Co. There were two brick yards, one east of town and one south of the Farmer's Union. The brick in the post office was made in the brick yard located east of town in Willard Clapp's pas ture. A man by the name of Armstrong managed this plant. By the year 1901 Elmwood boasted of 23 business establish ments. We were indeed growing. Yes, Elmwood had its boom days too. In 1902 a company was formed to dig for coal and oil. The vein of coal was very thin and as to the oil, well, it didn't materialize. (This history was written bv Mary McCaig Linhardt for the Cass County Historical Society. Mrs. Linhardt is the daughter of Llm wood's first post-master David McCaig . CLassilied Ad in The Journal cost as little as 50 cents. i'.iwi!l,.C,wilhAPiwit' jtttt idKi)4iMi ,tu.
