Board of Commissioners Atte;t: Chas. Land Count v Clerk No. 1088 July 21, 1958. Donors to Red Cross At Louisville Small boat accidents are re sponsible for some 1,400 water fatalities each year or more than one - fifth of all annual drownings in this country. These grim statistics were dis closed by Ed Mongeon, Red Cross director of safety servic es for 16 midwestcrn states, in a statement giving suggestions for preventing boating accidents. Mongeon points out that there are now 7,100.000 small recrea tional boats on American inland and coastal waterways, with an estimated 35 million devotees ol the sport. He said, "Outboard motor boats are greatly in the major ity of small crafts. The great popularity of the sport and re sulting accident hazards turn many a weekend pleasure cru ise into tram'dv.'' Mongeon listed the following safety rules which can prevent most boating accidents: 1. Stay ashore in bad or thr eatening weather. Learn to re cognize signs of storms so that, when out in a boat, you can re turn In time when bad weather threatens. 2. Don't "over-power" your boat. Many boats carry the Out board Boating Club of America plate telling the maximum horsepower the boat's outboard motor should have. If your boat does not have such a plate, consult a reliable marine deal er for the information before buying your outboard motor. 3. Don't overload your boat. One adult passenger to a seat is considered a good rule of thumb. 4. Avoid sudden or excessive bursts of speed. 5. When in trouble, think don't panic. For the sake of boating safe ty, Mongeon also listed the fol lowing points: 1. Know how to swim. 2. Before leaving shore, tell someone where you're going, and then stick to this cruise plan. 3. Provide a life preserver for every passenger. Insist that non swimmers wear a life preser ver when in vour boat. 4. Equip your motor boat also with oars, an anchor and line, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, a whistle for signaling, and if you go out at night, flares for signaling too. "Most boats will float when swamped or capsized," Mon geon pointed out. "Boat owners should look to their boats as a safety device, and if it is float ing after an accident, by all means stay with it." The American Red Cross has special small craft safety cour ses which are offered to all at no charge in the interest of pub lic safety. These courses cover recommended methods of small craft handling and "rules of the waterways." Boat owners are advised to contact their local information about the ARC Small Red Cross chapters for further Craft Program. County Purchases Of Savings Bonds $53,875 In June Thrifty Cass County citizens purchased $53,875 In Series E and H Bonds during June, Wal ter H. Smith. County Savings Bond Chairman, says. Smith in reporting sales for the first half of the year said they amounted to $440,562 which represents 60.9 per cent of the 1958 goal for the county. Nebraska total sales for June amounted to $6,987,193, which was 14.85 per cent above the June, 1957, figure, according to State Chairman W. B. Mill ard Jr. of Omaha. The sales covering the half year mark reached $52,909,471, showing an increase of 20.08 per cent over the corresponding per iod of last year, for 64.5 per cent of the state quota of $82 million. With sales running ahead of last year and the fine crop out look throughout the state, Neb raska could be well on its way to being one of the leading stat es in the nation at the end of 1958 in per capita and total sal es, Millard said. Sneezing Disease Threat to Piglets The American Foundation for Animal Health urges famers to be on guard against the hazard of atrophic rhinitis in young pigs, and to take steps to prevent it. Ths sneezing disease of pigs is very prevalent in some ar eas and causes heavy economic losses. The exact cause has not been discovered and there is no known cure, but veterinarians hnvp ripveloned nrosrams to keep the disease from getting a start on a farm and to bring; it under control if it has gained a foothold. One of the best precautionary steps, authorities say, is to pur chase breeding stock only from disease-free herds. Other mea sures include separation of the sows bfore farrowing, and sep aration of sows and litters un til weaning time and proper san. itation. Atrophic rhinitis usually af fects pigs between two and three weeks of ase, but may not become evident until they are iwo or three month old. Symptoms include sneezing, shaking of the head and rub bing the nose. If any (if these ,vni:loni.s appi-ar I hey should call for a prompt checkup. I I
