Paving Soon On interstate Near Gretna Corner The state department of roads has announced that concrete is to be poured next week on the first stretch of the Interstate Highway in Sarpy County. L. O. Graham, department con struction engineer, said the sec tion of Interstate No. 1 to be paved includes 6.4 miles between the Gretna Fish Hatchery corner and Highway 370 between Gret na and PaDillion. Specifications call for 10-inch thick pavement on the four-lane divided highway. State Engineer Ress has said it may be finished by fall. Summer Means Active Duty For 8,000 Ncbraskans Mid-summer season means several weeks of active duty for some 8,000 Ncbraskans who are in the national guard and re serve units over the cast. Those who belong to the Ne braska national guard, some 3, 500 in number will go to Camp Ripley, Minn., for the national guard encampment from July 25 to August 10. Local interest is in the reserve units who will hie themselves to Camp Carson, Colo. There the infantry division reserve from the states of Nebraska-Kansas-Missouri will train from August 10-24. This group will include the Heavy Weapons com pany of Plattsmouth. a part of the '.Vi.ith infantry of the l!9th skeletonised li'Jth division. Western Cowboy was the theme used in the decorations, toasts and songs at the alumni banquet Saturday evening at the school auditorium. This was the 45th banquet. It was served by the American Legion Auxil iary. Fred Lindsey, class of 1956, was toastmaster and gave the welcome. Jane Dietl, class of 1958, gave the response. John Murdoch played several accordion solos. Mrs. Chester stone presented two whistling solos. The fifth grade band play ed. Members of the band are Jim Nichols, Gary Andersen, Gary Fitch, Glenda Jones, Linda Waller, Irene Chriswisser. They were accompanied by Mrs. James Chriswisser The new officers are presi dent, Larry Banks; vice presi dent, Evelyn Thorne; secretary, JoEllen Nixon; treasurer, Mar vin Edmonds; toastmaster, Les lie Behrns. A group of neighbors and friends came to the Dick John son farm Monday afternoon with tractors, disks and har rows and prepared 150 acres of soil for planting. Included were Jullian, Billy, Arthur, Albert and Henning Johnson, Dick Stone, Earl Nolle, Harold Dodson, Har vey Bailer, Alvin Turner, Ronald Dickman, Gilbert Kime, Clinton Anderson, Oscar Brandt, Harry Empke, Martin Ross, Fred Scho maker. Land to a.sk the city of Plattsmouth to place a street light behind the courthouse. This is needed as a safety measure, the board feels. The alley there Is quite dark at night and the courthouse would be less vulnerable to prowling if the al ley were lighted, the board sug gests. Quiet Reigns The mid-week survey of tha docket in the police court today showed no new cases with only a few pending cases cleared up and settled. Dick Lanham of Council Bluffs, charged with speeding forfeited a bond of $19. Two pending cases for speed ing, Bernard Rogers and LaVern Klipp, both of Ashland, settled their fines of $15 and costs, total of $19 each. Dennis F. Nielsen, also charg ed with speeding, appeared and paid his fine of $15 and costs or a total of $19. Local PO Drivers Help Set Record For Road Safety Operators of Postal vehicles in the three-state Wichita Reg ion, (including Nebraska) con tinued last year to be the saf est in the nation, according to Frank Barr, Regional Operat ions Director for Kansas, Okla homa and Nebraska. For fiscal year 1957 the motor vehicle accident rate for the Wi chita Region was .57 accidents for every 100,000 miles driven, with a casualty rate on only .03 and an average cost of only $75.07. This compares with 2.13 acci dents and a casualty rate of .06 average for the nation as a whole . In 56,144,851 miles of driving during the year, postal vehicles of the, Wichita region were in volved in a total of only 318 ac cidents. By far the greatest cre dit goes to rural and city mail carriers of the region, whos? accidents totaled only 52 and 257 accidents, respectively, for the year. The carriers operating out of the Plattsmouth post office con tributed materially to this out standing safety record, accord ing to Leslie W. Niel, local post master. Local drivers, Rural, T. E.
