Schutz scored 14, Carsten and Bose 14 each, Marquardt 9 and Wohlers 8. That accounted for all but one of the Avoca points. Avoca won at volleyball, 12-4, 8-4, 7-11 and its grade school basketball team was a 31-21 winner. The volleyball team has an 11-8 record, the second basket ball team an 11-2 mark. The alarm was caused by the soot in a chim ney catching fire but was cx riingulshed without any dam age to the residence, the fire department members were on the scene In a few moments to check the spread of the fire danger. Semifinals will be March 6 and consolation, third place and championship finals March 7. 3,017 New Irrigation Wells Drilled Nebraskans drilled 3,017 new irrigation wells during 1957 a year of above normal rainfall making a total of 22,107 wells in the state. Eugene Reed, dir ector of the University of Neb raska Conservation and Survey Division, announced today. This is a decrease in the num ber of new wells compared with 1956 and 1955. both dry years. In 1956, 4,095 new wells were dril led, and in 1955, 3,297. He estimated the total acreage Irrigated by wells at 1.700.000. He said this shows that with favorable rainfall, the number of new wells will decline. He said many people had pre viously predicted that irrigation wens would increase at the same rate eacn year, despite tne wea-fout lner- neea urgea wen ariuers not to be greatly lured into over ex pansion during dry periods. The No. 1 county in new wells this year was York with 282. York also was the leader last year with 344. The other leading counties in new wells are Hamilton. 299; Hall, 200; Polk, 169; Dodge, 130; Clay, 129; Fillmore, 118; Buf falo, 115; Adams, 89, and Thay er, 81. Dawson still leads with the tot al number of wells of 2,540. Cass had 17 wells as of Jan. 1, 1958, 11 as of Jan. 1, 1953. Jim Shown and Larry Marler were out for Plattsmouth with effects of flu, although they re turned to school.
