"This Industry the expendi tures by out-of-state travelers in Nebraska could be develop ed even further by modest in vestments in the state-park and recreation-area program, by em phasis and interpretation of the state's historical values, and by development of roadside parks. The costs of financing such a program would more than be offset by Increased expenditures by nonresident travelers." The analysis also points out some of the problem areas in the administration of public re creation. For example, over 50 per cent of the state's population resides in 15 per cent of the state's area. Strain calls this area the "Zone cf Primary Need," and says that while there Ls an average of one acre of state-controlled recreation area for every 27 persons In the re maining 85 per cent of the state, there is only one acre for every 446 persons in the critical east ern portion. This condition, according to the land management chief, can be rectified and the state's tour ist potential further explored by a planned program of acquisi tion and development backed by a sound, annually reliable, fin ancing program. Strain reported that park at tendance has Increased fan tastically since World War II, with no leveling off in sight, yet. "Park, use," he said, "is one of the few forms of outdoor re creation in which the entire family can participate on an equal basis without first deve loping a skill. In these days of increasing pressures, higher pay, shorter work weeks, and the growing problem of delinquency, places for wholesome family re creation are essential to a heal thy society. 40 Degrees OK For Sorghum with 15 Moisture LINCOLN Grain sorghum with 15 to 16 per cent moisture may keep in a bin with out ex cessive damage until late March or early April. However, the possiblities of the grain staying in good con dition are much greater if the temperature is 40 degrees or lower, reports E. A. Olson, Ex tension agricultural engineer at the University of Nebraska. Once grain starts to heat it develops at a rapid rate, even cracked grain and foreign ma terial increases the danger of spoilage. Insects are more ac tive in grain when tempera tures are above 65 degrees. Molds also develop faster at higher temperatures. If the grain has started to heat, arrangements should be made for drying, Olson said. Temporary relief may be ob tined by moving grain to an other bin. Research has shown that grain sorghum with 15 per cent moisture, combined in late fall or early winter, was free of vis ible damage until spring, Olson said. Research also showed that germination decreased when the grain was stored with over 13 percent moisture. Fat acidity al so increased when the grain was stored with over 13 per cent moisture. If grain sorghum is to be used for livestock feed before spring, temperatures should be checked frequently. A grain tempra ture probe should be used week ly to locate hot spots that may develop .
