(SEAL) Raymond J. Case County Judi'e No. 3796 - Oct. 21, 28, Nov. 4, 1957. THE DRIVER'S SEAT How nuc uoes an automobile accident travel? On an open highway with a 60-mile speed limit, an accident may be moving at 120 miles an hour the speed of the on com ing car plus the speed of your own! Admittedly, when you're head ing for a pleasure spot, a par ty or a spin in the fresh air you'd just as soon keep your mind uncluttered by thoughts of impending doom. And if you're 1 that complacent Joe who's "nev er had an accident" and takes a rosy veiw of the odds you're fhrting with the thin line of saf ety between caution and casual optimism. Most of us are inclined to be lulled into a false sense of saf ety by the wealth of safety de vises built into our new modern expressways. Huge, reflective signs point out directions, warn ings and information visible for great distances, besides keep ing us on our toes. And highway dividers lesson considerably the chances of head-on collisions and sideswiping. But if your journey takes you over secondary roads that are poorly-maintained though heav ily travelled, the odds in your favor zoom downward with each pound of pressure your foot ex erts on the accelerator. Suppose you're clipping along one of these out-dated roads at the maximum allowed speed. There might, or might not, be a railroad warning sign just around the bend. If there is it might be just as antiquated and inadequate as the road. Add an approaching train's speed to your own, and the ending to the story wouldn't be hard to es timae. That same road holds number less other dangerous situations such as narrow bridges, cars whose headlights are not visible beyond the next bend or be neath the brow of the hill, or a diminished width of road at the very spot where you must pass an oncoming vehicle. And the nice, bright signs posted on the modern expressway are as yet none existent on many such strips. Food for thought for every mo torist is the fact that he spends 80 per cent of his car hours jolting and jimmying along sec ondary roads. Even if he does n't care about the number of teeth - and nerves - he shakes loose, he should be concerned at the potential and deadly dan gers hovering over his compla cency. Next time you sit in the dri vers seat, check your speed ometer. Then remember that an accident may be traveling at twice your speed and neither you, your car nor the road is equipped to avoid accidents at such speeds. Cigarette Tax Take Drops Off The Nebraska tax collections on cigarettes took a dip from nearly half a million to less than $300,000 in October. Part of the cause of the drop off is figured as coming from the fact that retailers stocked up on cigarettes in advance of the one-cent tax increase which brought the tax to four cents a package on September 20, acc ording to the state cigarette division of the state. The higher rate did not apply to stocks already in the hands of retailers when the increase went into effect. The rush to stock up resulted in collections of $495,498 in Sep tember while the October amount dropped to $299,753. MILK PI TS OCT I III i: dishing, Okla. November and December are the months when swine flu com monly occurs in thousands of hog lots, according to the Amer ican Foundation for Animal Health. It appears suddenly and causes a high fever, farmers should be alert for signs such as loss of appetite, thumpy brea thing, coughing, a mucus di charge from the eye and nose, and prostration. When such sym toms appear, a veterinarian should check the animals to make sure whether flu or some other disease is causing the tro ble, and to set up proper nurs ing and treatment. With the right care, the ani mals may recover in from four to seven days. The sick hogs should be confined to a clean, dry pen, and given plenty of wa ter and light. Authorities of the Foundation said that preventive measures against swine flu include keep ing hogs away from old straw stacks, making sure that they have dry, draft-free quarters, and pasture rotation. Study Bellevue City Hall For Future Use Our neighboring city to the north, Bellevue, is interested in study of the future of their city hall. The question is whether to have the building repaired or used as a historical monument. The building was erected in 1855 as the Fontenelle bank, and one time was used as place of meeting of the various commit tee meetings planning the fut ure state of Nebraska. It is one of the real historic places in this part of the state. A detailed study is being made of the building as to the feasi bility of modernizing the struc ture and putting it in full repair. The council is to determine the question of whether the nec essary changes be made to the struct urq left as a historic mon ument in this oldest city in the state.
