Jerome Van Winkle In Mediterranean Participating in operation "Green Epoch", the first North Atlantic Treaty Organization na val exercise to be held in the Mediterranean this year was Jerome D. Van Winkle, store keeper, USN, son of Mrs. Vio let Crawford of Plattsmouth, a board the destroyer USS Willard Keith. The destroyer, a unit of Des troyer Squadron 22, arrived in the Mediterranean Feb. 6. The squadron assisted the USS For estal in her first appearance as a member of NATO's Mediter ranean fleet by performing plane guard duty lor the 60,000 ton super carrier during the oper ation. A REPUBLICAN CONGRESS IN '59? President Eisenhower, speak ing by telephone from the White House, recently told an eight-state-conference of Republican leaders in Omaha, Nebr., that this was the right time to start driving for the election of a Republicn Congress in 1953. FEDERAL PAY ROLL . The Federal pay roll hit an all-time high a billion dollars, a month in January, according to U. S. Senator Harry F. Byrd, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Byrd said the total civilian employees on the U. S. Government pay roll reached 2,390,507 in February. Those from Eafile were Laura West, Olive Westlake, Luellla PUscher, Beth Chrlstensen, Lau ra Lann'inc. Lucille Westlake and Sylvia Muenchau. They report a very fine meeting, ana were priviledged to hear he South American student from Brazil now attending Nebraska Wes lpvan Universitv to become a county. The officers clinic was also worthwhile. The regular business meeting and election of District officers followed, after the lm rjressive memorial service of the many active W. S. C. S. members who have completed their course and called to rest, "I Walked Where My Saviour Walked, vocal solo closed the memorial service. Fred Wenzel, Eagle, entered the Bryan Memorial Hospital suffering a heart attack several days ago. The latest report in forms us, he will be confined at the hospital several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Frohlich spent he Easter weekend at Edgewater, Colo., with their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Haertel. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Scatter good called at the William Os senkop and Harold Scattergood homes at Lincoln Sunday after noon. Mr. Ossenkop is recover ing satisfactorily after having suffered a stroke and was in the hospital for several days. The baseball team of Eagle sponsored a pancake supper ser ved at the Eagle Methodist Church on Thursday evening The fire department was call ed to the homes of Mrs. Al- tina Butt and Mrs. Nora Hursh Monday evening. No damages were reported. The All-Athletic banquot was served by the ladies of the Wo men's Society of Christian Ser vice of Methodist Churches Fri day evening. The banquet was well attended. Friends of the Ivan Bssett family have heard of their re cent purchase of a motel in Denver, Colo. The Bassett's mov ed from Eaie a couple of years ago and are nicely located in Colorado. A. N. Bertie Stubbs, now sta tioned in Wikiki Island, in the Hawaiian Islands, wrote his par ents, he would be leaving there for Japan on Monday, the 29th, and would operate from a Japan base for several months. He plans to be home the last of September. He is enjoying his assignment very much and see ing lots of beautiful and inter esting country. George Winkler was ill at his home, a few days last week. He was able to enjoy the Eas ter Sunday dinner at the homo of his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fleisch man, prior to his taking ill on Tuesday, suffering a lung in fection. Mrs. Elizabeth Emery of Arco, Minn., visited her niece and hus band, Mr. and Mrs. LaVelie Swarts, Kay Marie and Kem, a few days last week. Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Swarts were Omaha visitors on Thurs day. Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Woods and Mr. and Mrs. Loren Hill ol Lin coln visied at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Rodaway Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Livcsay, of Wolf Lake, 111., visied their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lee Ballance, during the past week. John Ronhoode Sr., returned home recently aler having been at the home of his son and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ron hoode at Fremont. The hitter's small daughter is slowly recover ing from the polio illness of several weeks. She is now able to take therapy treatments at the hospital. The South Dakota folks remain ed overnight at the mother's hone and were dinner guests at the Eagle parents, Home on Sunday, leaving for home later in the evening. Mrs. E. E. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ander son, Sr., visited Mrs. Andersons sister, Mrs. Martha Springer, Wednesday evening at Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. Wellington Den nis and family, at Elmwood, entertained at their new home, Mrs. Dennis's mother, Mrs. Flos sie Trumble, grandmother Mrs. Rosa Caddy, brothers and fam ilies, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Trum ble and Connie, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Trumble and three chil dren, of Eagle, an aunt, Mrs. Pearl Caddy and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Wadlow of Lin coln, Mr. Dennis' mother and aunt of Elmwood. Mrs. Earle Schmidt returned home Monday evening after en joying a visit at Camp Chaffee, Ark., with her husband, who is stationed there. He plans to be home for 14 days on May 10th, prior to change of location. Linda, Lyle and Patricia Ster ner of Nebraska City, spent sev eral clays visiting their grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Phillips while their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sterner, visited at Denver, Color., returning home Wednesday. Fred Spahnle returned home from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, having been relieved of the leg cast and is adjusting himself very well, with the brace and use of crutches to get about the house.
