Ben- inett, of Verdon, Nebraska to Miss Mary Jicka, added an other member to the John Drake family, a grand-daughter-in-law. Mrs. Dudley Leavitt Phone 42447 The Christmas spirit of giving gifts, was truly exemplified by the citizens of Elmwood, by a community gift of a new TV set bemg given to one of their handi capped citizens: William Holke. Mr. Holke has been partially paralyzed for nearly six years. He is able to be up and around home sometimes, and again is confined to his bed for as long as six weeks. His eye sight is not affected, but his speech is; and it is hoped he will enjoy the TV and it will be a source of entertainment. His wife cares for him and also looks after the home place, taking care of the cows as she sells milk, as well as poultry and eggs. Their church, the St. Paul E. U. B. first started the move ment, and as it became known, all in the community were hap py to join in giving, the "mer chants and other churches par ticipating also. After the 10 a. m. church ser vices at the Emanuel E. U. B. Church, where the Rev. T. H. Kampman is pastor, the fam ily had its Christmas dinner at home. Daughter Beth and husband; Mr. and Mrs. James Batt, Lincoln, as well as Mer winna, the other daughter, who was also home from the Uni versity of Nebraska for the holi days, completed the family gathering. The mother was as sisted in the dinner, by the daughters. tor unfolded the story, the char acters took their place on the stage, and the adult choir sang carols. John Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Miller, gave a prayer. The pastor, Dr. Bert L. story, told about Christmas and gave the benediction. Afterwards7 Santa Claus, re presented by Harry Arnold, dis tributed gifts to all the children. The adult choir had several additions to it, one was Ned Tot man, who was in Elmwood for the evening. Effective Program The Sunday School of the Methodist Church, under the di rection of Mrs. Ted Hall, super intendent, assisted by teachers, gave 2. very effective Christ mas program, on Christmas Eve at the Methodist Church, in Elmwood. The program opened with a scene of old time Christmas, with Mrs. G. R. Eveland, dress ed as grandma, seated in a rocker, with Kristie Evelarv and Kenneth Miller as grandchil dren. The Nursery Class sang songs of Christmas, as they decorated a Christmas tree, using home made ornaments, as in other times. Pop corn was: strung, and also colored paper made into strings for decorations. Ron nie Helmink gave the welcome. The other children each gave a line about Christmas, and its meaning. A Nativity scene was also pre sented, with the showing of a manger, with the Christ child, mother Mar,y and Joseph as well as the shepherds, and the wise men. John Hall was narrator. The Adult choir dressed in their white robes were seated in the choir, and as the narra- Candle Service The Sunday School of the Christian Church at Elmwood presented a Christmas program on Christmas Eve. The Sunday School superintendent, Mrs Skyle Millr, Jr., and the other teachers planned and arranged the event. There was a junior choir, which sang carols. They were seated in front of a large Christmas tree, which formed an effective background. The nursery class and pri mary classes gave recitations, interspersed with the singing of carols. A candle lighting service was very effective, with Mrs. Myrtle Stege reading the story of the: birth of Christ from St. Luke: 2, and the junior choir sang! appropriate carols, closing with "Joy to the World," in which all joined in. The other S. S. pupils as well as the audience following the candle lighters in to the dining room for a social hour. The teachers, as Santa help ers, it was said, served the nursery class with cookies and chocolate milk. The adults had a serving table with fancy cook ies and coffee served to all. There was a large attendance including visitors from out of town. A pound shower was given the pastor, James Snyder, and fam ily as a gift from the congre gation for their Christmas. They were really pleased with the gifts, and the expression of love from the churchmembers. The Christian Church has for several years given their pastor a "pound shower" for Christmas, which has always been appre ciated, better than a one gift selection. tai:arBB:M;inBimiB:!ii!!K2ii!K n n a ri a S a p H a LET DOWN When, disaster crosses you up . . . dependable insurance yon't let you down!
