The Council Bluffs Chronotype for March 5, 1856, published the following editorial: "Claim Meetings have recent ly been held in Omaha - Flor ence - and the State, in Ne braska, at which vigorous mea sures were agreed upon, for the mutual protection of settlers on the public lands. As the period approaches when these lands will be brought into market,! their value is proportionately i increased, and the desire to se cure them, becomes greater.! "Jumping Claims" is therefore getting to be quite a common, if not profitable business and hence the greater need for the owners and occupants to com bine together for the purpose of keeping off intruders. The rule should be instinctly . adopted and rigidly enforced, that posession and actual occupancy are indis- pensibly necessary in all lases for the ownership of a claim and than all will work smoothly enough." Claim Clubs were organized in a rather considerable number of pioneer Nebraska communities. The first one of record seems to have been that organized un der the famous Lone Tree near the ferry landing on Omaha's river-front July 22, 1854, which in the name of "The Omaha Township Claim Association" promulgated a set of "Laws" and announced that, "The juris diction of the Association shall extend north and south of the grade section line in Omaha city three miles and west from the Missouri River six miles." The Bellevue Settlers Club promulgated similar laws and defined the area of its jurisdic tion on October 28. Others fol lowed suit and by the time the first townships were subdivided, claim law was enforced for about one hundred miles along the Missouri River and as far back as the settlers thought the land to be of any value. There also were Claim Associations out in the Platte Valley. There was one at Fremont, for exam ple. Claim Clubs wrere wholly extra-legal organizations and, in deed, were in defiance of fed eral law, which prohibited set tlement upon the unsurveyed land. Nevertheless r they were familiar institutions in all front ier communities, and the first session of the territorial legis lature supremely indifferent to the constitutional niceties of the situation, passed an act recog nizing and defining the authority of claim clubs. As surveys were completed, of examining, hearing, allowing and adjusting all claims or ob jections duly filed. Dated November 13th, 1956. (SEAL) RAYMOND J. PAGE FIVE making possible the filing of valid claims in the federal land offices, the need for the claim clubs ceased and they quietly passed out of existance. New Chrysler Boasts Many New Features A lower, sleeker and more powerful Imperial for 1957, fea turing rakish, arrested-motion styling, new torsion bar suspen sion, curved side glass, dual headlights and four-way wrap around windshield, was an nounced today. It was unveiled at Hansen Motors, Nehawka, Oct. 30. "We are broadening the mar ket for this finest Forward Look automobile by offering it for the first time in four distinct series and in every popular body style," said Clare E. Briggs, vice president in charge of sales. Chrysler Division, Chrysler Cor poration. "Although retaining the ele gance and commanding grace of its heritage, the 1957 Im perial sets a new standard in contemporary styling. It incor porates such advanced en gineering features as 3-speed pushbutton TorqueFlite drive, ball joint torsion-bar front sus pension, wider low pressure 14 inch wheels, infinitely-adjustable six-way power seats, com bined air conditioning and heat ing system, recessed safety door handles and torsion-bar top lock on the first Imperial con vertible since 1951. Featuring a new FirePower engine which delivers increased horsepower, the 1937 Imperials are nearly four inches lower and three inches wider, yet include more leg room and head room than last year's models. A feeling of .arrested motion is created by body lines in the general shape of a sleek wedge a basic design incorporating the feeling of stability, poise and direction. Mass is, concentrated at the rear. The eye is led for ward by the convergent lines of the wedge, the design con cept of advanced aircraft, rac ing cars and racing boats. A new double wraparound windshield adds 54 per cent more front glass area, for driv ing ease and safety. Another styling innovation for 1957 is curved side glass, which follows the sculptured lines of the body and emphasizes the car's low center of gravity. Imperials are available in a choice of four separate series which includes all popular body styles. The Imperial series is offered in a four-door sedan, two-door Southampton hardtop and a four-door Southampton hardtop. The new Imperial LeBaron, a four-door sedan, is out done in luxury only by the command ing Imperial Limousine, tradi tional car-of-state. Skin Damage to Cattle is Avoidable LINCOLN There are many things that will cause skin dam age and hair loss in cattle that may be confused with the early symptoms of hyperkeratosis or X-disease of cattle. Dr. O. D. Grace, animal hy gienist at the University of Ne braska, says research has shown that some solvents and carriers used in dusts, sprays, and rubbing devices for insects and external parasites will cause skin damage and hair loss if used too strong or too fre quently. To avoid such skin damage and hair loss in cattle, Dr. Grace suggests' farmers fol low these precautions: 1. Keep cattle away from ma chinery so they cannot lick or come in contact with oil or grease on the equipment. 2. Fence off drain pits for oil or places where crankcase oil is dumped. It also is a good idea to keep grease containers away from cattle. 3. If used motor oil is em ployed in devices where cattle rub to oil themselves, care should be taken not to use "breakin" oil from new motors or oil from motors where an upper cylinder lubricant has been added to the gasoline.
