York at the McCloud Hotel, Monday night, Nov. 12 to lay plans for the January drive for polio-fighting funds, it is report ed by Mrs. Will Strabel of Elmwood, Cass County Chair man, March of Dimes. Mrs. Strabel went to York with Mr. Bellnap, Mrs. Diers and Air. Hughes. In attendance at the meeting besides those from the eight county area were Ted. R. Hughes, Seward, state chairman for the March of Dimes, Mrs. Elsie Diers, Omaha, state chair man of women's activities and Cinton Belknap, Lincoln, Ne braska represenative for the National Foundation for Infan tile Paralysis. Among those in vited to the meeting were March of Dimes workers from Cass, utler, Fillmor, Hamilton, Merrick, Nance, Polk, Seward and York Counties, Mrs. Strab el said. "The Salk vaccine has dra matically cut the incidence cf polio during the past year." said Mr. Hughes in remarks to the group, "but there are today a bout 80,000 children and adults who urgently need a helping hand in their long, difficult struggle. "Doing all we can to give them the care they need," he added, "is just as important a part of the March of Dimes vie tory over polio as the Salk vac cine. That is why we have chos en as our 1957 March of Dimes slogan, 'Let's Finish the Job ' Mrs. Diers reported that all polio deaths reported in Nebras ka this year have been among adults and asked workers to urge that all adults as well as un vaccinated children secure the protection afforded by the vac cine at the earliest possible date. She especially urged all high school and college youth to give the matter their immdeiate attention. Daughter's Visit Mr. and Mrs. George Eiden miller's daughter, Marlene, and two little sons recently visited her parents for a week. Mrs. Eidenmiller drove to Overton, and brought the daughter, Mrs. Grant Gard Jr., and little sons home with her for a visit. On Saturday Mr. Gard came, and stayed overnight, and on Sun day the Eidenmillrs drove them back to Overton. They report it was a very pleasant week for them; and while here Marlene attended a bridal shower at the home of Mrs Dale Hall, honoring Joan Backemeyer one of her classmates Several other classmates were also there who are not able to be togeth er very often A correction of guests of Wil liam Atchison s in the news item of Nov 12, to include also 'wiw' Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Green. and Mr and Mrs Melvin Miller He entertained 23 guests, and only 19 were named, this makes the list complete, of those who enjoyed the turkey dinner Miss Maxine Eidenmiller, Lin coln, and Mrs Maggie Seikman, Eagle, were callers at the George Eidenmiller home Saturday eve ning They attended the buffet supper at the Methodist Church, and later called on her uncle and aunt Mrs Lena Bornemeier, and Mrs. enry Bornemeier return ed home Monday after a week's visit with relatives in Chicago Fishing Pals Meet Last Saturday evening, Bettie Underwood, Ella Fischer, Evelin Ransford, Cuba Hardaway, all met at the Alva Reid home. The men folk attended lodge and the ladies enjoyed games, and later the hostess served a lunch. All enjoyed a pleasant evening and hope to get together again. They visit ed Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Thom sen where they all had dinner Previously they had attended church at the Methodist Church, and the christening of Cindy Sue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Thomsen, The grandpar ents of both parents 'were pres ent and attended them at the christening service. Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt and fam ily returned Mrs. Mendenhall to her home in Elmwood. Several Elmwood friends at tended the funeral of the Rev- Ezra F. Haist, former pastor of the E. U. B. Church here. Services wTere held Wednesday at Calvary E. U. B. Church, incoln, where he had been liv ing since his retirement from Elmwood church. Mrs. Gertie Katherine Nickle passed away early this week, and services for her have been j set for Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church, Elmwood, She was the wife of Pete Nickle who survives her. They lived two miles north and 2y2 miles west of Elmwood, all their mar ried life. Mrs. "Verna.Simpkins, arrived from her home in Massachusetts to spend the winter in Nebraska with her children, as is her cus tom each year. She arrived Nov. 8 and is spending this week with her daughter, Mrs. Russell Miller at Gretna. Talk of the Town By Margaret Dingman Phone 241 Col. He is now retired from active service with the army and is engaged in engineering work in the west. Mrs. Earl Lancaster of Murray is in the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. She en tered last week. David Koke returned home from the Childrens Memor ial Hospital Friday. He re turned, to the hospital Sat urday for further observation. Harley Cecil was taken Sat urday to the Jennie Edmundsen Hospital Council Bluffs, where he is undergoing treatment. Joe Grauf, of the Omaha Pub lic Power District, was a visitor here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Grauf and his many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Parr Young of Nehawka were in Plattsmouth Friday to look after business matters ' and visiting with friends. Mr. and Mrs. II. E. Reck- ard spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. George May abb and family in Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Jennie Porter departed for Lincoln Saturday where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. Georgia Mitchell and may spend the winter there with the daughter. Mrs. Ivar Bomberg and son, Steven, were honored at a fare well pre-Thanksgiving dinner Sunday at her uncle and aunt's', Mr. and Mrs. Roy Thorns, west of the city. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wiles, Mr. and Mrs. Leighton Ballinger and daughter, Linda, Donald Rhoades the hosts and son, Marvin Thorns. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Heil were at Lousiville Saturday af ternon to attend the funeral services of Mrs. W. H. Heil aunt of Walter. Mrs. Heil, a long time resident of this county was nin ety years old. Dr. and Mrs. R. N. Ransom and daughter, Mrs. Bruce of Tekamah were Sunday . visitors with the J. R. Schreiner family. The Wooster children vis ited here while their parents were moving to a new residence at 6508 North 24th Street, Omaha. Former Residents Celebrate"Co!den x Wedding, North Bend Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Wesch, of North Bend, celebrated their golden ' wedding anniversary Oct. 28. The couple was mar ried Oct. 30 1906, in Omaha by Reverend Fred Langhorst. The celebrants are former residents of Cass County having lived on a farm west of Platts mouth. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wesch were hosts at a family dinner at noon, with 30 guests being served. In the afternoon, from two un til five, open house at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wesch honored the couple. The guest book, presided over by Judy Wesch, a granddaughter, showed that 130 persons called. Refreshments were served from a table covered with an imported cloth of linen cutwork. Placed in the center of the table was a . white wedding cake, or namented with the number "50" in gold surrounded by yellow roses. This cake was baked and decorated by the Wesch's only daughter, Mrs. Melvin Marian. Following the open house a buffet supper for 60 relatives was served. . All of the Wesch's children and their families were home to share in the happy occasion. They are: Mrs. Melvin Marian (Elizabeth) of Hastings, Gus of Denver, Colo., Fred, Herbert, and Adolph, Jr., all of North Bend. Mrs. Bertha Steppat of Win side, a sister of Mrs. Wesch and Mrs. Herman Schultz of Ray mond were the only ones present who attended the wedding 50 years ago. The three year old daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Lutz, Susan Lutz, is in criti cal condition at the Chil dren's Memorial Hospital in Omaha. The patient en tered Friday evening and is in room 212, suffering from mephitic infection. No vis itors are allowed. Eagles Auxiliary Meets Thursday Eagles Auxiliary met on Thursday evening with Presi dent, Helen Jordan, presiding over the business session. . Reports were, heard from com mittees: Sick and Visiting: Honey Lou Cole; Membership, Verla La Hoda; Delinquency, Bette Ladd, and Entertainment, Vlasta Land. President appointed Marge Willis as chairman of foods com mittee, and Irene Smith, pub licity. Auxiliary voted to join coffee key strips Christmas Club as they have for years previously, also to fix baskets for needy fam ilies for Christmas. Marge Willis reported the tur key dinner served November 10 very successful. Balloting was held on six can didates, and initiation was con ducted, according to ritual for Catherine Hyde, Esther Peder son, La Mae Gill, Grace Sub lett and Alata Baker. The safety lesson for the month "Pedestrian Protection" was given by Irene Smith. Following the business session, Vlasta Land and Shirley Hull conducted a games party. Refreshments were served to Auxiliary and Aerie " in club rooms. The meeting was opened by singing "America" and reading of the club collect and giving the Pledge to the Flag. Six members answered roll call by giving their experiences on "My First Meal as a Home maker." After a short business meet ing the lesson on Christmas wrap and trims was given by Mrs. Franz Petereit and Mrs. Boyne Parson. Three visitors were present. Mrs.' Esther Schneider, Mrs. Er nest Hennings and Mrs. Eugene McGill. The hostess served a lunch after which the club adjourned to meet on Dec. 13 at the home 0aSft(i of Mrs. Boyne Parson. Meeting The Women's Missionary So ciety of Christ Evangelical Luth eran Church met Nov. 7 at the home of Mrs. John Fusselman, Louisville. Mrs. Joseph Puis, president, nresided over the businessmeet ing An Interesting letter" from the Reverend L. J. Wolff family in Liberia, Africa was read. This missionary family is well known to the members of the society and they are keenly interested in the progress of their work in Liberia. ti Mrs. Puis reported on the United Lutheran Church Wo men's Convention held recently at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha. "Americans on the move" and "Next Door to My Neighbor" were the lesson topics presented by Mrs. Puis. Visitors were Mrs. Harlan Hen nings and Mrs. P. G. Hennings. Refreshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting will be Dec. 5 at the home of Mrs. John ild. The topic, "Everywhere Christ mas Tonight" sharing some of the Christmas observances with Christians of other lands, will be presented. . Journal Want Ads Pay Wintersteeh School Has A Successful Visitation Day Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a. m. the Wmtersteen School held visitors day with 43 mothers attending. The Kindergarten entertained by marching to music and play ing the sticks. The first, second, songs. third and fourth grades read from their readers and sang On display in each room were pictures, samples of writing and other work done by the children. The rooms were decorated in the Thanksgiving theme made by the students. The mothers in spected the student's workbooks and progress charts. During the recess of each room the mothers served coffee fur nished by the Parent Teacher Association. The room mothers are Mrs. Howard Schwenneker, Mrs. Joe Eraas, Mrs. John Davis, Mrs. Winfred Dasher and PTA President, Mrs. Farnum Taylor, were hostesses.
