Rev. Miller has recently been discharged from the Army where he has served as chap lain Since his discharge he and his family have been visiting relatives at Gothenburg and Norfolk. Their Sunday guests were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Stander and family. ' RETURNS FROM HOSPITAL Mr. and Mrs. Martin Stenberg returned home from the hospital last week and are improving nicely from their injuries re ceived in the accident a week ago. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kellogg and family attended the golden wedding celebration of Mr. Kel logg's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ayres of Alvo. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mansfield and Mrs. Willa Weldon visited Dr. and Mrs. Metheny in Lin coln, Thursday. Mrs. Weldon re mained for a longer visit. Jane . Stickney celebrated her eleventh birthday Friday after noon by having her school mates of District 2 come home with her after school for a par ty. Lance Bower was another gwtst at the party. There were eleven children there for games and lunch. Guests of Mrs. L. J. Walrodt Saturday overnight were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Walrodt of Omaha and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Sturzbach of Fremont, addition al Sunday dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Marolf and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Bachman. Miss Mary McCoy of Platts mouth spent the Labor Day weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Oli ver Felker and family. Mrs. Glen Fosnot, Jim and Jennifer of Lincoln spent several days with Mrs. Fosnot's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rich ards, Mr. Fosnot came for them Thursday forenoon. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hester and Jeffrey of Alliance spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs, Richards. Mrs. Ray Bower returned home from Kearney Wednesday after spending a few days with her son, Rex. Rex came to the Bower home for the weekend. Mrs. Harold Shaw, Ivan and Lloyal and Mrs Ivan Armstrong called on Mr. and Mrs. Luther Wagner and Marvel Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Simpson sold their farm recently and purchased another near Elm wood. They moved to their new home Saturday. School started in District 2 Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Frank Hrodsky is teaching there again this year. Miss Nancy Ab bott of Omaha is the teacher in District 34, which has also open ed this week. Miss Abbott is boarding with Mrs. John Maack. VISITS AT VALLEY Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hall spent Wednesday and Thursday at the George Schneider home at Valley. Sunday guests at the Hall home were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hall and family of Lin coln, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Strode and family of Bellevue and Mr. and Mrs. George Schneider and Darlene of Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Deal were Sunday dinner guests at the Chet Rhoades home at South Bend. HERE FROM WEST Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Slote, Judy and Janie of Burbank, Calif., have been visiting at the home of Mr. Slote's sister, Mrs. Elton Erickson. Mr. Erickson and family, the Ericksons and their guests were Sunday dinner guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harm Slote at Hickman. The Rocket Tractor 4-H Club will meet Thursday evening with Richard and Dewey W. Moore. Greenwood Boy Reports For Duty In Texas USNAS Corpus Christi, Tex. Charles F. Warren, aviation electronics technician second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Warren of Greenwood, Neb., reported here August 9 from Attack Squad ron 55 aboard the aircraft car rer USS Philippine Sea. He was assigned to Advanced Training Unit 101. This unit is currently carrying out advanced pilot training for Naval Aviation Cadets and student officers in the Navy's TV-2, a two seated jet trainer. Before joining the Navy in August 1953, he was graduated from Lincoln High School, Lin coln, Neb. Schools At Avoca Open On Monday Mrs. Henry Maseman Journal Correspondent Mrs. Eline Short spent Thurs day and Friday with Mrs. Em ma Rawalt. Mr. and Mrs. John Stubben dick left Tuesday for New York where they will meet their two married daughters and families. John Lingle, Sr., is suffering from a badly infected eye. Miss Anna Ruhge, Upton, Calif., is visiting relatives in and around Avoca. Mrs. L. G. Todd of Union visit ed Mrs. Myrtle Wolph Thursday. Mrs. Silas Everett is help ing at the state fair this week. Mrs. Richard Norris is home from a Lincoln hospital follow ing an appendectomy. A baby daughter was born to Mr." and Mrs. Robert Ackley Sunday at St. Mary's hospital. The infant lived only a few hours. Mrs. Ackley is the for mer Elinor Nielsen. Miss Emma Ruhge, Cook, is now making her home at the Christensen home in Weeping Water. Avoca schools opened Monday September 3rd with high school enrollment of 39. Faculty com prises A. E." Mrs. Caroline Marquardt came home from Colorado Springs, Sunday. Her daughter, Mrs. Ted Heil, Russell, Iowa, came this far. Her granddaugh ter, Nancy Heil will stay for a longer visit. Mrs. Elmer Kepler and chil dren came home Sunday from Harrison, where she has been visiting for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Have man are helping out at Fort George while Mr. and Mrs. Andrews are at Rochester. Mrs. Nancy Carsten is help ing Mrs. Newlingen at the cafe this week. Ladies helping Mrs. John Mohr celebrate her birthday Friday were Mrs. A. E. Aeschbacker, Mrs. Hans Jensen, Mrs. Joe Behrns, Mrs. Kristine Sailing, Mrs. Henry Danklef Miss Math ilde Madsen, Mrs. Henry Mase man. Geraldine Walters spent last week with her uncle, Herman Walters at St. Joseph, Mo., on Sunday her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Crofton departed to return her home. Mrs. Ella Wulf and Mrs. Har vey Hillman spent Labor Day weekend at Avoca. Monday dinner guests of Mrs. Dena Ruge and Frances were Kenneth Nutzman of Compton, Calif., Alfred Nutzman, Mrs. John Ehlers, Mrs. Jordan Kik jer, Bertrand, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Maseman, George Dur ham, Mrs. John Nutzman. In the afternoon they all visited at the Maurice Ruge home near Syracuse, and the Leonard Nutz man home at Unadilla. Kenneth Nutzman showed pictures of his family and his trips around the world - on his cruises with the Navy. Miss Bernice Cole left Mon day for home in Iowa, after spending a month here with her uncles Clyde and Willis Fletcher and families. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Vette, Levant, Kans., visited relatives here last week. Kord Sudman, well known here, passed away at his home Tuesday morning after several months illness. Mr. and Mrs. Bob McDonald returned Sunday from a trip to the East. Wedding Mark Week End In Murray News Last Saturday afternoon the United Presbyterian Church was the scene of a .quiet wedding. Donna Curttright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Curttright, Sr., and Leonard Bell son of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Bell were married with only the parents present. Reverend Roy P. Mor ris was ; officiating. The . young folks are making their home in Murray, Next : Wednesday evening, September 12th a miscellaneous shower will be given honoring Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bell in the Christian Church parlors. Everyone is invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs Louis Sack at tended the Ward reunion held at Bethany Park in Lincoln last Sunday. Mrs. Carla Sack of Lin coln and Mrs. Pearl Dana of Fairfield, came home with the Sack's to visit with relatives a round Murray for a few days. Mrs. James Eastridge under went surgery last Tuesday morn ing in the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln. Mrs. Eastridge has had a back operation before, but has found it necessary to have another. Mrs. Mae Fomer of Dayton, Ohio is visiting for a few days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lancaster. During the vacation - of Rev. Robert Larson the pulpit was filled the last two : Sundays by Mr. Merle Rogers and Mr. Rich ard Sack, respectively. The young men did a nice job fill ing in. School started in Murray last Tuesday and the - children are once more learning to work as well as play together. Mrs. Ralph Meyers returned home from the St. Marys hos pital last Saturday evening. She is feeling as well as can be ex pected. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lancaster called on the Meyers last Mon day evening. C. Streight. Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Streight of Omaha were Monday visitors. Mrs. Glen Thiessen returned home from the Bryan Hospital in Lincoln Tuesday. ' Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Wednesday afternoon visitors of Mrs. Larry Carnicle were Mrs. S. F. Morris of Ashland, Karen of Murray. Mr. and Mrs. Jess Fidler spent Thursday evening with Mr and Mrs. Clyde Has well at Wa bash. William Kline recently return ed home after spending the summer at Elmwood Nursing home. Mr. and Mrs. V. D. Livers were weekend visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Livers and family at Western. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Dill and Bernie and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cop sey of Omaha were State Fair visitors Sunday. Mrs. Joe Knecht and Miss Evelyn Grady attended the Fair on Monday. DEFENSE COSTS From fiscal 1951 through 1956 (if the current spending rate continues), the cost of rearming for the jet-atomic age will be about $528,500,000,000. This per iod also includes the years of the Korean War. High defense officials estimate that spending for military defense over the 15-year period extending to 1965 may total more than $500,000, 000,000 even with the nation peace.
