PART II Characteristics of a Good School A good school will satisfy the educational needs of each indi vidual. This implies a program comprehensive enough to meet the needs and interests of all youth. The citizens are respon sible for the support of schools which meet those needs. It is not the purpose of the public school to train youth in one limited, narrow or precon ceived curriculum but rather to give them opportunities to broad educational experiences where by they may become indepen dent, competent citizens who can think for themselves as mem bers of a free society. If we accept this principle, and we must if we believe in the "Amer ican Way", then, the school must afford a broad educational opportunity to each youth. A child's growth is continuous as he develops mentally, emo tionally, and physically from total dependency at birth to ma turity in adulthood. A good pub lic school program provides for the developmental needs of all children from kindergarten through grade twelve. A good school provides: A. A one-half day kindergarten continuous throughout the school year under the direction of a well qualified teacher. Kinder garten is the child's introduction to at least thirteen years of for mal education. It is a readiness experience to help the child make the transition from the home and family environment to school and community life. Spe cial facilities, teaching ma terials and equipment are neces sary. : B. An elementary school staff ed witlT professional and quali fied teachers in grade one through grade six. The elemen tary school has the responsibil ity to provide learning experi ences for each child according to his mental, emotional, social and physical interests and capa bilities. The developmental re quirements of growing youth are taken care of through the teach ing of: 1. Fundamental skills. These emphasize reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic and lan guage, including oral and writ ten expressions. A sound read ing program would include ex periences in, reading readiness, word recognition (through phon ics and other devices or meth ods), understanding of materials read, and the use of library ma terials. Spelling and writing are provided, with emphasis on sat isfactory expression of ideas rather than rote recitation. Arithmetic provides experiences and skills which will lay the foundation for a better under standing of the mathematical competencies. Stress on the fun damentals of arithmetic to as sure accuracy and speed in both oral and written computation is important. " . 2. Social understandings. These emphasize a thorough knowledge of the world in which we live. Integration of the geo graphical, historical, sociologi cal and economy aspects of our society and culture is necessary to the preparation of children for good citizenship. In the pri mary grades emphasis is given to the understanding of the com munity, state, nation and world in which the elementary child is living. 3. Science experiences. These emphasize a general knowledge of the physical world in which we live. Emphasis ,is given to experimentation, demonstra tions, observations, research skills and the abilities for re cording of information. The ef fective teaching of science nec essitates the opportunity for pu pils to participate. Thus, it is essential to have sufficient and appropriate materials and equip ment for such activities in the classroom, A UN rii THE REOPENING FOR THE NEW SEASON OF THE P alsm outh Duck IF mow 329 MAIN ST.
