Say, "I Read it in The Journal" Mrs. Winters Is Dead After Long Illness Mrs. John Winters, 83, died Tuesday in Weeping Water fol lowing an illness of several months. She was born in 1872 in Guil ford, Mo., the daughter of Sam uel and Margarett Aldridge. In 1888, she was married to John L. Winters who died in 1948. Mrs. Winters came to Platts mouth in 1933 from Guilford, Mo., and was a member of the Methodist Church there. She leaves sons, Leslie of Plattsmouth, Waldon of Ferser- ville, Ida., Marvin of Platts mouth, Merlin of Texas City, Tex., and Paul of Marysville, Mo. She also leaves 19 grandchil dren, 44 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Margarett, died in 1918. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at Caldwell Linder Chapel and Saturday r-.t 2 p. m. at the Guilford Meth odist Church. Caldwell-Linder funeral car will take the body to Guilford and conduct the services there. Funeral Services Held in Lincoln For Mrs. Seikman EAGLE (Special) Funeral services were held yesterday for Mrs. Floyd Siekman at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walton. Rev. Foster Cress officiated. Mrs. Siekman died July 28 at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Lin coln. She recently underwent major surgery there. - She leaves her husband, Floyd a daughter, Mrs. Bud Ballancs; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Francke; and several sisters. Burial was at Elmwood. Edward Donat Rites Are Held At California SANTA MONICA, Calif Fun eral services were held Friday morning at St. Clements Church, Santa Monica, Calif., for Ed ward C. Donat, formerly of Plattsmouth. Mr. Donat died at his home following an illness of the past five months. He was 58 years old. A native of Plattsmouth and a resident here for many years, he was the son of the late Edward Donat and Mrs. Donat. Burial was in Holy Cross Ceme tery in Santa Monica, Calif. Surviving are his wife Marie and son, Edward, of Santa Monica, his mother, Mrs. Ed ward Donat, of. Plattsmouth, and sisters, Mrs. Mary Havelka of Wahoo, Mrs. Mabel Mark of Santa Monica, Mrs. Rose Rhodes of Gardena, Calif., and Mrs. Helen Faith and Mrs. Teresa Hendrichs both of Platts mouth. Mrs. Lewton, 89, Dies In Lansing, Michigan AVOCA (Special) Friends here received word of the death of Mrs. Lewton, 89, of Lansing, Mich. Mrs. Lewton made her home with her daughter, Miss Opal Lewton. She was well known here where she lived until going to Lansing to make her home. Also surviving are Ellis Lew- ton of Craig and Ray of Walt- hill. Burial was at Elmwood Mon day morning. Carrie Gorthy, 89 Is Dead at Lincoln MURDOCK Mrs. Carrie Gor they, 89, died recently in Lin coln. She had been a Murdock resident for the past year. She came here from New York. She was born in North ampton, N. Y. Mrs. Gorthey leaves sons, L B. of Murdock and Frank of Gloversville, N. Y.: a daughter, Mrs. Anna Floyd of Trenton, N. J.; nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral Rites Held Saturday For Dr. Brendel AVOCA (Special) Funeral services for Dr. J. W. Brendel, 76, were held Saturday at the Avoca Congregational Church. Rev. A. E. Aeschbacker officiat ed. Dr. Brendel, an Avoca physi cian for more than 50 years, died July 26 after an illness of several months. Bearers, all nephews of the doctor, were Fred Marquardt, John Marquardt, Ted Hile, George Cockle, John Cockle and Dr. Richard Brendel. Music was furnished by Mrs. Roy Ruhge accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Henry Smith. Mrs. Ruhge sang "Lead Kind ly Light" and 'The Lord's Pray- er.' Burial was at Avoca Ceme- Henry Gentry Dies In California Lake; Once Lived in City Word was received here re cently of the death of Henry Gentry of Anderson, Calif., He was a former resident oi tms city. Mr. Gentry's body was found in a lake, but medical examin ation showed the cause of death to be a heart attack. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Earl Shanhaltz and Mrs. Fred Howland of Plattsmouth. Mitchell Movie Will Play at Cass Otto Preminger, the Holly wood actor, director and pro ducer has just finished direct ing Warner Brother's "The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell." The movie, atarring Gary Cooper as Billy Mitchell, will be playing at the Cass Theatre Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, August 5, 6 and 7. Murray News Schools Hire 4 Teachers By Mrs. Neva Read Tel. 6021 MURRAY (Special) Four teachers were hired recently for posts in Murray schools. They are: Mrs. Joe Hoschar, kindergar ten and first grade; Mrs. Rob ert Lambert, second, third and fourth grades; Mrs. Chet Wiles, fifth and sixth grades; and Mrs. Floyd Becker, seventh and eighth grades. School will start September 4. School Picnic The Christian Sunday School held its annual picnic, sponsor ed by the Ladies Aid Society, last Sunday noon. It was well attended and everyone came with well filled baskets. Sunday dinner and supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mink and family were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gochenour, Jr., Denise and Rickey of Platts mouth. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cotting ham and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Cottingham and family have re turned from a nice vacation at Yellowstone and the Black Hills. They were gone 12 days. Bill Seybolt had a cast re moved from his leg last Mon day. He is still walking on crutches. He wore the cast for six weeks. Marie Milburn was visiting with friends in Murray one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Powell, Carol and Mary were visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lancaster and Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Noell this week. The Powells are from Albequerque, N. M. Sheldon Smith spent several days last week in the hospital with a kidney infection. He re turned from the hospital last Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Dick March and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lancaster left Thursday for a few days visit in Missouri. Eilene Read was visiting a few days this week at the home of Marjorie Hoschar. Wendy Spangler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Spangler, was honored last Thursday with a birthday party given by his mother. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Curttright, Bob, Jr., and Donna, drove to Kearney last Sunday to visit Floyd and Raymond. Lancasters Return Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lan caster, Janice and Nancy re turned last Friday afternoon from their vacation in Colorado. Mrs. Wendell Bell and Mrs. Bob Cuttright, Sr., were shop ping in Nebraska City last Tues day afternoon. Mrs. C. M. Read returned to Omaha last Monday to be check ed by her doctor. He found her to be doing fine and her foot is healing well. Mrs. Bob Farris has been helping prepare her meals since her hospital return. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bodecker are away on vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Richter and family also are vacationing. Peggy Emmert is visiting for a week with relatives in Alvo. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Emmert. Jerome P. Pucelik Gets Scholarship In Polio Research Two Creighton University Medical School students are re cepients of March of Dimes fel lowships of $410 for special re search in biological and physical sciences related to medicine. They are Harry J. Wander of 2314 Woodlawn, Omaha, and Jerome P. Pucelik of Platts mouth, Nebr. Both men are members of the class of- 1958 at Creighton. Announcement of the fellow ships was made this week by T. F. Naughtin, Jr., acting chairman "of the Douglas County Chapter of the National Foun dation for Infantile Paralysis. The fellowships will finance extracurricular study for eight weeks at Creighton. The pur pose of such awards is to re cruit medical students for careers in research by giving them special opportunities early in their schooling. Both men were nominated by the dean of Creighton. Lloyd W. Cleveland Gets Top Phone Post LINCOLN The appointment of Lloyd W. Cleveland as gen eral traffic superintendent of The Lincoln Telephone and Tele graph Company, effective July 31, was announced today by Merle M. Hale, vice president. Cleveland succeeds Lyle P. Young who retires after nearly 50 years of service in the tele phone industry, 44 of which have been with LT and T. In fact, they stayed at the home of Margaret Mauzy here Monday night. The girls are friends of Mrs. Peggy Vroman of Park Forest, 111., who is a niece of Miss Mauzy and Mrs. Minta Todd of Plattsmouth. The girls have met with sur prisingly few difficulties, so far. They have had one flat tire and n littip trouble with the sears Ion one bicycle. Outside of this, their problems were restricted to pedalling up mountain roads in Pennslyvania. They plan to pedal the en tire distance except for the trip across the Mohave Desert. They will return by train. WTe asked them one final ques tion before letting them return to their pedalling: "What one thing has delayed you the most on your trip?" "Press interviews," they cried simultaneously. Misfortune May Soon Come to an End (Continued from Page 1) from ah aggravated stomach wound. Two weeks previous he had been playing at the home of relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kief, while his mother was run ning back and forth from the hospital to her home and to the Fulton home. Roger with his cousins was hammering steel with a sledge hammer when a piece of steel flew and embedded in his stomach. The wound was cared for by the relatives and appeared healed, but Roger was taken for a check-up on one of the mother's trips to the doctor office just in case this streak of bad luck was chasing Mrs. Roberts. The piece of steel was removed from the stomach area and this is one patient Mrs. Roberts brought home with her. How is she standing up under all this? Mrs. Roberts, a fre quent book reviewer, says she thinks she'll write a story "The Hospital and Me."
