Councilmen also discussed the police department procedure of checking meters for mechanical defects and tripping them back to "violation" if no car was parked in the stall. No action was taken on the matter and Mayor Bruce Gold said today the procedure will remain in effect. The council was presented with a report of preliminary work being carried out by the swimming pool committee. (TDassaQiccIlwci Sheriff Is Offered the Key (Continued from Page One) bility for any improper per sons entering the court house through the contro versial door. The sheriff complained the commissioners should have gone to him in the very beginning and ; settled the issue before the door was barred. At several different times the sheriff hinted he would do away with his nighttime hours program set up only recently to offer radio-telephone protection both in the city and out in the county. However, commissioners assured the sheriff they were in no way critical of the procedures of his office and felt he was doing a "wonderful" job. The move is aimed at in creasing the security of the court house the commis sioners explained, and it was felt the move could be ac complished . best through locking the door. John Beckman, court house custodian, told com missioners he found people loitering in the court house after hours and they told him they got in by the door near the sheriff's office. The sheriff claimed the door leading into his office from the outside was a gen eral access doorway and it was not his duty, but that of the custodian to make certain it was locked. Mr. Beckman disagreed. The sheriff also suggested the commissioners could au thorize installation of bath room facilities in his office, but the idea was dropped after commissioners offered him a key.
