Guests included Mr. and Mrs. John Berner, Jr., and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Berner and family, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Ber ner and family, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Berner and family, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stubbendick and family, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Hauschild and family and Rev. and Mrs. Alvin Zerlinger and children. A program given by the grand children included a duet "Moon light and Roses," Maye and Kaye Berner; by the younger grandchildren "Jesus Loves Me"; a reading by Mrs. Allen Hauschild, sermonette, by Rev. Zirlinger. A grcup of friends came in to congratulate them and a lunch was served to them. Mr. and Mrs. Berner received many gifts, cards and flowers. She is the former Mary Ottens, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ottens of Avoca. Avoca School District 105 has been hit hard by the Mumps this past week. Seven out of 15 pupils have them. They are Rita Neu- meister, Paula Ludwig, Roger Neumeister, Maurice Lange, Di- anne Lange, June Eaier, Janice Stratton. Mrs. Mead held a party at her home Tuesday afternoon. riattsmouth, Nebraska Abstracts of Title "Title Insurance" THOMAS WALLING CO John Mohr has been down in bed with his leg elevated. Relatives and friends helped Jess Gruber celebrate his birth day Friday evening. Relative and neighbors went in to the home of George Sud man Friday evening to help him observe his 80th birthday. Merle Hennings spent several days here last week recuperat ing from surgery. The homemakers 4-H club and their leaders Mrs. Albert Bose, Mrs. RalDh Stubbendick and parents, held a skating party Friday night at Elmwood skat ing rink. Mrs. Robert Mickle, Mrs. Har ry Mickle and Maynard Bruns attended funeral services Fri day for Jim Mickle at Shannon City, Iowa. Mr. Mickle was born and raised west of Avoca and was the youngest of the family, also the last of the family. Mrs. Fred Marquardt, Mrs. Ernest Norris, Mrs. Charles Marshall, Mrs. Albert Carr at tended the State Women's Club Convention at the Fontenelle Ho tel, Omaha Wednesday. M r s. Norris also acted on the state credential committee. Mrs. Maurice Nelsen of Lin coln visited here over the week end. Avoca Surgery Patient Harry Brockhoff is a surgery patient at Bryan Memorial Hos pital, Lincoln. Elvin Emshoff took suddenly ill Saturday night and had. an emergency appendectomy a t Bryan Memorial Hospital. Avoca John Lingle, Jr., entered St. Mary's hospital Thursday and was put in traction following an injury to his back. . Prizes at pinochle went to Mrs. Hans Jen sen, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ems hoff and William Dettmer. Mr. and Mrs. William Brandt, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Murdock, Mr. and Mrs. George Mey er, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Nielsen, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Staack attend ed a birthday party at the Merle Meyer, home in Nehawka Mon day evening honoring Mrs. Merle Meyer on her birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sundman and Herman Sudman were in volved in an auto accident corn ing to Avoca to visit their par ents Sunday. No one was hurt, but the car was demolished. Supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wessel, Ruthann and Rita were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hallstrom, Bette Jeanne' and Robert James. The supper hon ored Rita on her birthday. Mrs. George Wessel has been dismissed from . Syracuse Mem orial hospital. Elmer Ruffner, Otoe bad sur gery at St. Mary's Hospital, Ne braska City last week. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Straub and family of Omaha visited at the Paul Straub home Friday. Avoca Church Delegates Rev. Alvin Zerlinger, Fred Kirkhoff went to Ft. Collins, Colo, as delegates to the dis trict convention of Lutheran Churches. A student from Blair college occupied the pulpit Sun day. Donna Lange 10 - year - old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Har ry Lange of Avoca was the win ner of the Bugs Bunny coloring contest as appeared in the Ne braska City News Press. The Friendly Farm girls 4-H club met with Shirley Bose Sat urday. The meeting was opened with the 4-H club pledge. Mar ilyn Tritsch is a new member. After the business meeting, we basted darts in our dresses. The next meeting will be with Ruth Buckholz. Avoca Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mar shall attended a Farm Bureau school of knowledge at Hastings ast week. Mr. Marshall showed his pictures of Africa to the whole group. On Wednesday, Mrs. Marshall attended the women's club meeting at Oma ha where Mr. Marshall attended a telephone meeting. Mrs. Henry Maseman and Richard were overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Halm and daughters near Syracuse Saturday night. - ? Cemetery Kensington met in he church parlors Friday with Mrs. Roy Splitt. Twenty five were present. Mrs. Roy Harshman, Mrs. Lundberg were guests. Mrs. Ernest Emshoff was acting sec retary. The next meeting will be cash donation May 4 at the Congregational Church starting at 2 o'clock. Alvo News Undergoes Surgery Mr. - and Mrs." Walter Nickel drove to Merra last Tuesday to get Mrs. Nickel's sister, Mrs. Iva Scott, who just got out of, the hospital Monday and had surgery two times in just a few days. She got here in time to help her mother, Grandma Fenner, celebrate her 92nd birthday. The Nickels son, Keith, stayed with his grandmother Nickels while his parents were gone and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Stwart stayed with Grandma" Fenner and looked after the chores. , Ahro Drive to Shannon Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Mickel drove to Shannon City, Iowa, Friday to attend the funeral of Mr. Mickel's uncle. Mrs. Ruth Stewart is in the hospital at Lincoln. She had surgery for a goiter and is get ting along all right. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ayers attended the funeral of Mr. Ed Juniper at Ashland Sunday afternoon. Alvo Mrs. Richard Weiler and two children of Lincoln were Sunday guests of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orval Marcoe, and brother, Gary. DOG RIDES ON TOP BEAVER, Utah Tex, the 6 year - old Labrador - German Shephard dog belonging to Frank Gentry, refused to ride anywhere except on top of Gen try's automobile. The dog used to ride in the open when the Gentry's had a pick-up and switched to the car top when Gentry switched to a car. Tex has ridden on top at speeds of 70 miles an hour, but he re fused to ride outside if it's raining or snowing, or if the metal car roof is the least bit slippery. IN COMA 4 YEARS; DIES ASHOTniE. N. LOOM AVOCA (Special) The A club of the Avoca High School sponsored an athletic banquet in the school auditorium April 7. The menu and programs were printed in a red folder the shape of a cardinal. The school colors were caried out (red and white.) A cardinal the size of a large window with a black background was the work of the students and made a very striking decor ation. Wayne Wessel former Avocan and sophomore at University of Nebraska, was toastmaster. Robert Noerrlinger, captain of the team, spoke on basketball Marianna Linhardt, co-captain of valley ball team spoke on vol ley ball. Mr. Spencer Led ger talked on "Decisions." .Volley ball awards went to Carlene Allgayer, Marianne Lin hardt, Luella Buckholz, Marilyn Bose, Maye Berner, Kaye Ber ner, Elaine Brockhoff, Betty Reitsch, Karen Kepler and Ros alie Roesch. Basket ball awards went to Bob Noerrlinger, Stanely Ems hoff, Harold Ehmke, Bob Kirk hoff , Glenn Murdock, Galord Bose,Darrel Johnson, Carrol Carsten. Mr. Yocum presented the sportsmanship award to the school cross county team. The cooks prepared the meal Mothers of the A. club helped in the kitchen. The Schuelkes received lovely gifts, flowers and lots of cards. All but one of their attendants at their wedding were present. One cousin of Mrs. Schuelke has passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Haas of Lincoln and Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Mickel were s Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hardnock. Mr. and Mrs. Haas attended church at Alvo Sun day morning. Mrs. Lloyd Nickels' parents from Comstock came Saturday to spend a few days with she and Mr. Nickels. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hendrick son were Sunday evening vis itors of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hard nock. Mrs. Grace Brunkow went to Lincoln Saturday afternoon to visit Mr. Brunkow at the hos pital. She spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brun kow. She came home Sunday night. Mr. Brunkow isn't very well. Mrs.: Brunkow spent Mon day with Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Kinney. . " Alvo A covered dish luncheon was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Stroemer Sunday eve ning honoring the birthday of Mrs. Stroemer Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bornemeier, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Clements, Mr. and Mrs. Orist Cook, all from Elmwood and Mr. and Mrs. Art Hanson of Greenwood. Mrs. Archie Miller and Mrs. Harold Nickel attended the con vention of the W. S. C. S. at McCook from Wednesday, April 4th until Friday, April 6th. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sutton drove to Fremont one day last week to visit one of Mr. Sut ton's nephews, who is home from the Army on a furlough. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sutton vis ited at the E. P. Klyver home last Thursday evening. Mrs. Lloyd Mickel and baby daughter, Susan Gail, came home from the hospital Friday afternoon. Mrs. Maud Keller was a Fri day afternoon visitor of Mrs. Sam Hardnock. Alvo Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hennings of Omaha spent the week end with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Reber, and their daughter, Terry, who stays with the Rebers and goes to Eagle school while his mother teaches school at Ralston. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Stewart and Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Campbell attended funeral services of Mrs. Ransford at Palmyra Sunday afternoon.
