epj . w..v. V.V.....V.,M ,,,, Mrs. Lewis Baker W. S. C. S. Meeting The W. S. C. S. met Tuesday afternoon in the parlors of the Methodist church. There were a great many in attendance. Mrs. Sigvald Jensen, president, opened the business meeting. Seng and prayer followed. Mrs. Herbert Petersen gave an account of a seminar meeting held in Auburn last week which was attended by several mem bers. Mrs. Jensen also gave a report on the quiet hour and day of meditation at Louisville. Mrs. Walter Andersen was in charge of devotions, song and prayer; with responsive readings of Thanksgiving. Mrs. Kenneth Wiles gave some interesting facts concerning women of the Bible and today. Mrs. Sam Hughes gave a Bible quiz. At the close, refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Dan Rutledge, Mrs. Clar ence Schmadeke, Mrs. George Smith, Mrs. Herman Wegener, Mrs. Francis Thoren, Mrs. Rob ert Baker and Mrs. Glen Hene ger. Mrs. Ted Carnes was the only one present at the birthday table with Mrs. Jensen in charge. Weeping Water Junior Women Mrs. Clarence Schmadeke wv hostess and Mrs. Frances Thor en co-hostess Thursday evening to Junior Women's Club mem bers. There were 14 members and one visitor, Miss Pearl Schultz, present. Mrs. Dan Rutledge conducted the business meeting. Commit tee reports were given. The sec retary read thank you notes from Mrs. Willis Rhodes and Mrs. Roger Grow, who are for mer members of the club. Several ideas for a civic proj ect for this year were introduced and discussed. Plans for the December meet ing were made. The evening will begin with Christmas car oling. All members are to meet at 6:45 p. m. downtown. These toys were brought to the meeting and will all be taken to the Nebraska School for the Blind at Nebras ka City. Mrs. Farley Amick and Mrs. Melvin Bickford wTill de liver them next week. A lunch was served by the hostesses. Weeping Water Women's Association The Congregational Women's Association met at the church on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The president, Mrs. Mogens John son, w7as present after a long period of illness. Yearly reports of the secretary and treasurer were given. ' Mrs. E. E. Lorensen, chairman of the memorial fund commit tee, gave a report of the many gifts made to the church from that fund. Mrs. Homer Jameson conduct ed a memorial service for two members who died in the past year, Mrs. Sarah Spahn and Mrs. Edna Shannon. In connection with the service Mrs. E. C. Day and Mrs. C. V. Wallick sane. Mrs. J. M. Ranney conducted Thanksgiving devotions, assist ed by the Rev. Frederick Leav itt, who led the group in read ing Psalm 100. Mrs. H. C. Wilkinson was the leader of the program. She was assisted by a panel composed of Mrs. Louis Noble, Mrs. Arnold Detmer and Mrs. Ben Olive. Re freshments were served. Weepinp Water Mr. and Mrs. Lee Stratton and Kenneth of Weeping Water were guests at an anniversary din ner Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Gillispie in Omaha. This dinner was to honor Mr. and Mrs. Fred Betts ol Nebraska City on their 52nd wedding anniversary. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Everett Haith and family of Julian, Nebr. Mrs. Stratton, Mrs Gillis pie and Mrs. Haith are sisters. They are: president, Mrs. Harian Stock; vice-president and program chairman, Mrs. Eugene Domin go; secretary-treasurer,' Mrs. Kenneth Baier. A bridal shower was then held to honor Miss Barbara Wiles, who is being married on. Christ mas. Roll call was answered by giving written advice to Bar- bara. A number of games and con tests were played. Barbara was then presented with gifts. The hostess served a lunch. D2cember meeting will be the annual Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Harlon Stock with a 12:30 covered dish luncheon. Weeping Water Welfare Society The Welfare Society met Mon day afternoon at the Methodist church. A comforter was tied during this meeting. New officers were elected. They are Mrs. E. E. Mcore, president; Mrs. Bcb Bak er, Sr., vice-president; Mrs. Stel la Worman, secretary; Mrs. Myrtle Jameson, sacretary pro tern and Mrs. Hattie Sperry, treasurer. Hostesses for the occasion were Mrs. Agnes Jensen, Mrs. Anna Rauth and Mrs. Florence Christensen. The December meeting is to bs a covered-dish luncheon at 12:30, followed by a program and gift exchange. i Weeping Water Birthday Surprise Arthur Schmidt wras quite surprised Saturday evening when several friends dropped in to help him celebrate his birth day. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Roy Stratton, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Betts, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Baker and Mr. 'and Mrs. -Vernon Dean. The evening was spent playing pinochle. Legion Presents Toys to' Blind Last ' Thursday evening, sev eral Legionnaires, representing American Legion Post No. 237, went to Nebraska City, taking with them over $100 -worth of toys which they presented to the Nebraska State School for the Blind. " One of the Legionnaires re ported that "a greater joy he never had as he saw the excite ment in the faces of these chil dren as . they received these much needed toys." Upon learning this need for recreational toys at the state sponsored school, the Weeping Water post spearheaded an American Legion District 12 drive for toys. Other posts in the district which includes sev eral southeastern counties are 6'f : . i.j Worshipful Master Maynard Ramge planning toy drives. The American Legion received a substantial discount cn these toys from Gambles Store and Michelsen's. Jerry Regler, superintendent cf the Nebraska School for the Blind, related that the school has 30 students between the ages of five and ten that are dependent on a few, old broken toys for recreational purposes. He also said that that figure was to be about 40 in the year 1D5G. These children coming from all over Nebraska and two from Wyoming, seldom get home ex cept on Easter and Christmas vacations. Weeping Water Scw'N Sews The Sew'n Sews met Friday evening with Mrs. Neil Fitzpat rick. Ten members were pres ent. Mrs. Dorothy Ratliff was a visitor. The evening was , spent doing sewing and fancy work. Toward the end oi tne evening a couple of games of charades were played. The hostess served a luncn. . Weeping Water Better Best Plans A Christmas Party Better Best Extension club met Friday, Nov. 11 at the home of Mrs. William Heebner for an all-day meeting. There were 15 members and 3 guests, Mrs. John Day, Mrs. Hugh Cleland and Mrs. John Fitch, present. Mrs. Lee Stratton and Mrs. Ethel Hermann gave two lessens on : Entertaining." Plans were made for a De cember Christmas party. Each member was reminded to bring their key strips. Collection of these strips is an annual proj ect of this club. They meet Dec. II. Timothy at Nebraska City . Roger Kendall, who has been ill at his home, is much better at this time and was able to sit up a little while last Saturday. Dr. and Mrs. Anderson were at Union School last Friday morning where they gave all the students health examinations. Union Pupils Surprise Frank Anderson was given a surprise last Friday morning in the lunch room where all the grade pupils gathered and sang the birthday . song to him and gave him a shower of cards, fruit and candy. The faculty and cooks gave him a colorful shirt. All this had to be done on Friday but : Frank's birthday was really on Saturday, Nov. 12. Mr. and Mrs. Burr stancuey oi Wavne, Nebraska spent the weekend visiting the parents of Mrs. Standley, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Dysart. They will stop at Lincoln on their way home to visit their daughter. Union War Dads Meet Union War Dads and Auxiliary met Tuesday evening in Legion Hall. The Auxiliary voted to send two dollars to Omaha Veterans Hosnital game fund. Plans wrere made to send member's son's in service a small gift for Christmas. Mrs. Charles Attebury report ed that the gift box to an iso lated base in Alaska was sent. Also a box of candy was sent to Richard Midkiff, a hospitalized service boy from Union. Plans were made to have the Christmas meeting an oyster soup feed. Instead of exchang ing gifts each couple is to do nate 50 cents which will be sent to Omaha Veterans hospital for a party for the patients. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs Charles Meredith and Mrs. Charles Attebury. Svanne Kendall who is at tending business college in Lin coln came home on Thursday evening to spend the holiday and weekend with her mother and brother.
