"Well, what do you Consumers Get Atomic Reactor Negotiation Basis With AEC 0 The Atomic Energy Commis- sion has officially approved, "as a suitable basis for further ne gotiations," Consumers Public Power District's proposal to build and operate a nuclear powered electric generating plant in eastern Nebraska, ac cording to an announcement made today by Chairman Lewis L. Strauss of the Atomic Energy Commission in a speech made in New York and confirmed by Pre sident. Earl I. Mead of Consum ers. The AEC action on the CPPD bid represents the successful culmination of months of de tailed study and analysis by Consumers' personnel, of the economic and technical feasibil ity and benefits to the State which are possible from the op eration of a plant of this type. Consumers' officials empha sized that much work yet re mains to be done before actual construction of the plant can begin. "Actually," Mr. Mead said, "AEC acceptance of the Con sumers' proposal as a basis for for negotiation means that there exists, between the District and the AEC, a mutual understand ing as to the general terms rel ative to the construction and generating plant as outlined in operation of a nuclear powered our April 1 proposal to the Com mission, with modifications as suggested in August' of this year." - - ( A contract must now be worked out between Consum ers and the AEC relative to the actual construction. Con sumers' officials were hopeful that such a contract can be formulated and approval in the near future. Consumers must then -apply or such AEC licenses as are re quired to construct such a plant, obtain operator licenses, train By Vern Waterman Upsey Daisey Even the most modern con veniences are sometimes diffi cult. Falling Leaves Rev. Seybold, like the rest of ue, is unable to resist the call of this fine fall weather. It gives ycu that old "want to rake the leaves" feeling. The only hitch was, in the case of the good Rev erend, he was busy watching a man rake the leaves on the lawn of St. Paul's. " Easily Satisfied? Searl Davis, when asked about his activities, said "I no longer worry about anything except the things I do for Searl Davis, and he is a good boss and not too critical of my mistakes." Later in the a m. When asked by Fred Re a and John Vallery if he wanted to go out to see the progress on the new suspension bridge, he refused. He was heard to mutter as he walked into the bank, "Playboys." Luther Burbank? The otherwise drab windows of the Water Company have been transformed into a ver itable garden. As to the probable location of the plant, Consumers' of ficials were in agreement that considerable study of the manv factors involved must yet be completed before a final decision can be reached and AEC approval secured on an exact site. In commenting on Consum ers' reaction to the AEC' an nouncement of its action on the District's proposal, Mr. Mead We are fully aware of the tre- " mendous significance of this de velopment to the State and its people. Mr .Mead also express ed appreciation for the keen in terest and support given ' Con sumers by the Nebraska Re sources Division, the University of Nebraska, other public offic ials of Nebraska, and the many other actively interested indi viduals.
