They observed Carol's first birthday, which was last week. Albert Kunz returned home from Imperial, Monday. He had been away for ever a week on a business trip. Elmwood California Guests Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wink ar rived Sunday afternoon for a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Leavitt. Their home is in Bald win Park, a suburb of Los Ange les, Calif. They are long time fiends of the Leavitts. Elmwood Farm Bureau Meets Elmwood Unit of Farm Bu reau held an October meeting on the 19th at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Verne Nickel with 16 members present. Chairman La Verne Nickel presided. H e a 1 e s announced that the kickoff date for the fall membership drive would be Nov. 8 and continuing through Nov. 12. Each Unit will hold a caucus at the county convention previous to the election. Richard Pratt read the reso lutions prepared by the Units of Cass County to be presented at the convention. Hostess and co-hostess Mrs. Howard Vogt and Mrs. Henry Bornemeier served lunch after the meeting. -Elmwooc Mrs. Emma Zeig of Los An geles, sister of late Dr. Deering, visited Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Green, Tuesday, Oct. 18. Mrs. Emily Gonzales visited her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rudolph at Malcom, on Thursday and Fri day, Oct. 20-21. Returning Fri day evening. Miss Anna Nickel was remov ed from the hospital Saturday, and brought to the home of Mrs- Emily Gonzales, where she is convalscing from a heart at tack. Elmwood Legion Auxiliary Legion Auxiliary held an Oc tober meeting at the G.A.R. Hall on Oct. 13 with five mem bers present. A number of the members were attending a con vention in another place. Pres ident Mrs. George Brinton con ducted the business meeting. The auxiliary with the Legion is planning to sponsor a Ground Observers Corp for Elmwood. There will be a series of train ing meeting for same. Hostesses for the evening, Mrs. B. E. Sum ner and Mrs. Frank Buell, serv ed refreshments. Elmwood Mrs. Mary Williams and Lin da Gustin were entertained by Blanche Kuehn and Alice at Thursday noon dinner. Mrs. Sydney Moore returned recently from Shreveport, La., after a visit with her "daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Gibbs- She brought her granddaughter, Janet, home with her. She is to remain for an indefinite time, so she is at tending school in Elmwood. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Vogt and children left Friday after noon, Oct. 21, to spend the week and visiting Mr. and Mrs. Oral Kuehn and children at Hals ville, Mo. Elmwood Sioux City Visitor Mrs. Elsie Peterson drove from her home in Sioux City, Iowa, to Omaha where she vi sited with an aunt, Mrs. A. . G. Johnson, then both came on to Elmwood to visit Mrs. Frank Lo renz. Mrs- Johnson is her sister, and Mrs. Peterson is a neice of another sister. They had not seen each other for over 15 years. Her trial speed bests that of the hitherto speed-queen of sail the Catamaran Twins Birthday Mrs. Helen Schneider and her mother drove to Lincoln where she met the twins, Janet and Janice Reeder, and. went to Cambridge to their home, over the weekend of Oct. 14, for their 18th birthday celebration. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Nichels and fam ily came from Wauneta to join in the family festivities. Mrs. Schneider returned Sunday in time for the girls to be at col lege on Monday. Elmwood Mr. and Mrs. Eli McBride from Sioux City, were weekend visitors at the home of her sis ter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Rhoden, where they were entertained at dinner Saturday noon. They vi sited other relatives and friends in Elmwood. J. Sterling Rhoden, Norfolk, spent Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 18-19 with Mr. and Mrs Roy Rhoden. He is a brother of Roy. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dockelman, Mrs. James Kingham, Lewiston, visited Mrs. Blanche Kuehn and Alice, Tuesday, Oct. .18. Mrs. Linda Gustin was also a visitor. Mrs. Dockelman is a sister of Mrs. Kuehn and Mrs. Gustin. , Elmwood , , Hunters Return A party of nine met at Hay- don, Colo., Friday, Oct. 14, and went for a week hunting. They returned to Elmwood Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22. All got a buck. They were Orest P. Cook, LeRoy Cook. Wendel Cook, Or- ley Clements, Kenneth West, from Elmwood; Verner Perry, Big Springs. Gordon Dixon and two friends from California met them and all went together. Mr. Dixon's friends returned to California, while he came to Elmwood, where Mrs. Dixon and her sister, Mrs. Clarice Pickwell, had taken their car and driven to Elmwood, when he stopped at the meeting place of the hunters.' Elmwood Mr. and Mrs. Kazmark and baby son visited Mrs Laura Sutherland last weekend. Bob also called on Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Eidenmiller while they were in Elmwood. - Mrs. Lucy Lyle and Mrs. Floy Buell of Lincoln visited Mrs. Viola Hayes and the George Ei demiller's on Sunday, Oct. 16 Mrs. Hayes was at the home of her daughter that afternoon, so they called on both families at one call. Mrs. I. D. Huston,' mother of Mrs. Paul Eveland arrived at her daughter's home Sunday. She was returning from a trip to Alabama and stopped on her way to her home in Oceola. The Eveland's were going to drive her home from here. Elmwood Hay Ride Taken Last Friday evening, Oct. 21, most of the high school students went on a hay ride. Two trucks had been provided with bales of straw to sit on. One truck was driven by Bob Bornemeier and the other by Omar Bornemeier. The sponsors, Supt. Clarence Soucheck, and Coach Marvin Greenwood, each rode on a truck with the students. They were driven around the coun try for a joyous ride, and then all back to the school where they had a dance. The previous Friday evening they all went to Ashland for roller skating. At that party, there were four sponsors: Supt. Clarence Souch eck, Coach Marvin Greenwood. Mrs- Ruth Godbey and Miss Joan Hagemeister, all attended the party. Elmwood Nine young people from the E.U.B. Church, Elmwood, and their pastor, T. H. Kampman, attended the Young People's Group Meeting Sunday after noon and evening at Mynard. There was a large attendance from the various E.U.B. church es. Fred Wilken's is confined to his bed again with his heart condition. He was taken with an acute attack Tuesday, Oct. 18, and has improved some since v Winter Visit Mrs. Verena Olsen-Simpkins arrived in Elmwood, Oct. 14, from her , home in Reading, Mass. She makes an annual vi sit to her daughters near Elm wood each winter and stays until ' near spring. Friday her daughter, Dorothy, Mrs. Skyle Miller Jr., drove her to Mrs. Bill Rawson, Lexington. Mrs. .Raw son is Mrs. Miller's daughter. They remained at their home over the weekend while Bill and his wife attended a home com ing of his college at Ft. Collins, Colo. Sunday afternoon they ex perienced the first snow of the season at Lexington. Bill also reported it snowing at Ft. Col lins when they left there. Mrs. Miller returned with her moth er to Elmwood, Sunday evening. The occasion was also Mr. and Mrs. Parkening's fifth wedding anniversary. . Pfc. Harvey Lape of Vancou ver, Wash., made a short visit with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and LMrs. John Lape, Tuesday eve ning as he was en route to Ft. Campbell, Ky. ' Mr. and Mrs. Dale McLaush lih and baby daughter of Elm wood spent Tuesday evening at the Art Box home. Wednesday Mrs. Stella McLaughlin of Elm wood was a guest. Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Wotipka were in Omaha Wednesday as they accompanied their daugh ter, Adela and Miss Jackie Mich eal to the Grand Ole Oprey at the auditorium. Joanne Kellogg and Janice Dill accompanied their instruc tor, Mrs. Bernard Dill, to Peru Saturday where they attended a convention of the F. H. A. girls of district eight. ; : ; Dewey Moore and family at tended a family dinner at the Fred Rueter home near .'Alvo Sunday. The men folk hunted in the afternoon. : South Ashland ' ' Pheasant Hunters'? The pheasant season opened this week and . several of our local sportsmen were out hunt ing. Peter Stander and son, Francis, Victor Miller, William Stander and Bud Campbell went tc -Filmore county Saturday and hunted near Geneva. . Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Roeber and sons; Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Roeber and their house guests, Mrs. Don Leirly and baby, Linda, went to Plymouth Sunday and were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mooney. .Later the men hunted. South Ashland Mrs. William Stilwell and daughters of Unadilla; Mrs. Jack Brannan and family of Alvo were Wednesday supper guests at the Harold Kellogg home. Mrs. Brannan and children re mained and spent Thursday with her sister, Mrs. Kellogg. Mr. Brannan came for them Sun day evening and for supper. Mrs. Reuben Weberg of Pen der is spending this week with her sister, Mrs. Martin Stenberg and Mr. Stenberg and her moth er, Mrs. Emma Olson. Mrs. We berg, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Buck master of Ashland and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Stenberg, Janet and Mary Jo of Council Bluffs were Sunday dinner guests at the Stenberg home. South Ashland Deals Surprise A group of neighbors went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Deal Saturday evening for a surprise party. Mr. and Mrs. Deal and Steven plan to move to Oregon this week. Those in the group were Mr. and Mrs. Leon ard Roeber and sons; Mr. and Mrs. John Jones and sons; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Long and family; Bob Long, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Klipp and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Deal and Gary. After a social evening the self invited guests served lunch. J. Hendricks and Mr. Hendricks. Dr. and Mrs. W. E. Ziegenbein came to the Harold Richards home from San Francisco early Sunday morning. They spent the day and Monday there, and returned to their home in Crete Monday evening, taking their sons, Ricky and Mark, home with them. Mr. and Mrs. George Moomey of Elmwood and Richard Wagner of Reardon, Wash., visited Mr. and Mrs. Art Box and Milton Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Humston and family spent Friday evening at the Clinton Jones home. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Stickney and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Walters and family, all of Waverly, were Sunday visitors at the Ray Bow er home.
