Janice had been at her parent's home. They drove her to her husband, Corp. Charles Backemeyer. The Back emeyers are comfortably settled in their home near the Marine Base. They had the experience of "Hurricane lone," which struck at the base on Sunday and Monday when everybody was confined to their homes. All married men of the Marine Base, who live off the base, were re leased to be with their families.) Civil Defense warnings were constantly broadcast. The Mil-; lers think the hurricane com-j pares with our toronados, ex-i cept that the hurricane can bej seen coming. While at the base they saw John Thomas, another j Flmwood boy, who is located at i Camp Lejune. . They travelled j through eight states besides! Nebraska. Elmwood Center Club Picnic About 40. members and fam ilies of the Center Club assem bled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Parsell Sunday, Sept. 18, for a picnic dinner. The first meeting of the fall, as always, was a family affair. The busi ness meeting included a memo rial for Mrs. Alton Miller, who was a charter member. Her favorite songs were sung, and her favorite poem, "This little ' town," was recited as a tribute , to her. After an election of of jficers, all joined in supper be fore leaving. Elmwood Syracuse Gathering Mrs. Fcrence Weber and fam ily of Syracuse entertained at dinner Sunday, Sept. 18. in hon or of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Stub bendeck's wedding anniversary. They will be gone about a week. Elmwood Fred Likes Return Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lake re turned from a two-week trip to the Pacific Coast. They first at tended a wedding of Mrs. Lake's nephew, Donald Pendergrass, to Miss Beverly Fredrickson, at Great Falls, Mon., Sept 10. It was a large church wedding with a reception following, held at the bride's home. They report snow to have been falling while they were there and the homes were heated. Buster Durbin, who for merly lived in Elmwood,then to Nanatchee, Wash., where, they visited her nieces, and nephews, returning through Oregon, Ida ho and Wyoming. They reported a pleasant trip with no difficul tiss whatever. Elmwoorf Trip to Ft. Riley Ed and Viola Bornemeier made a trip to Ft. Riley, Kan., last Wednesday, Sept. 21. After visiting points of interest there they drove on to Abilene, Kan., to visit the Eisenhower Museum. The Musemum contains many articles of interest, trophies giv en to Gen. D. EL Eisenhower by many different countries, also books, pictures etc. The trip was made -in a day, although it was four hundred miles altogether. Elmwood Church Conference Members of the . Elmwood Methodist church, who attend ed the church district confer ence at Grace M. E. Church, Lincoln, Sept. 22. were S. L. Cle ments, Fred Buell, Richard Pratt, Eldon Mendenhall, Mrs. G. R Eveland, Mrs. Blanche Kuehn, and Dr. Bert L. Story and Mrs. Story. Mr. Harry Greene returned Friday from a business trip to Colorado. While in Ft. Collins he visited his daughter, Shirley. Mrs. Harry Krall has returned from the hospital and is report ed improving from her recent illness. She has been . missed from her duties in the post of fice. Elmwooa Sick Visited Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stege visited Everett Brockman Thurs day evening and found him im proving from his recent acci dent. Mr. and Mrs. Rav Fenti- man were also visiting him.' Elmwood - School News Seniors held two meetings planning their proposed initia tion of the class of 21 freshmen On Tuesday they conducted the initiation and marched the freshmen from the High School to Mam Street and down to the bank, which created consider able mirth since they had dress ed each freshman in a costume to represent a comic character. The business of the meeting was discussing plans for a con tention Oct. 11, to be held in Elmwood. Others attending were Mrs. Chester Bornemeier and Mrs. Howard Vogt. Elmwood 1 Seattle Visitors Friends of the Glenn Thom as family visited them over the weekend. They were 1 Mr. and Mrs. Anton Nelson, ' whom they had not seen for eight years. Elmwood Bucknall Visitors The Clarence Buicknall's had an automobile load br relatives from Kansas arrive Friday noon, to attend the funeral of Ella Rosenow. They gathered at their home before and after the fun eral services. Mrs. Bucknall is a niece of the late Ella Rosenow. Elmwood Ladies Council Ladies Council of the Chris tian Church met Friday after non at the church. Mrs. Shirley Wenzel conducted the devotions and eave the lesson on the American Indian. Mrs. Jessie Creamer gave a description of their recent trip to Valdez, Alaska, which covered over 9000 miles. Most of the trip was over ood roads, but some were rough. She told of the princinal busi ness of Valdez as shipping. She showed a bottle of 'water taken from the Yukon river. Election nf officers resulted in the fol lowing being elected: President, Mrs. tsniriev wenzel ; vice-president, Mrs. Arthur G. Nance, sec ond vice president, Mrs. Robert Dankleff; Mrs. Howard Stege, secretary; Mrs. Sklye Miller, Sr., treasurer. Hostesses were Mrs. Lucy Ste?e. African Pictures Mr. and Mrs. Charles Marshal and son, Clark, who was home over weekend from Doane, drove to Archer Friday evening, Sept. 22, visiting , Rev. John Oeklerk ing and wife, an uncle of Mrs. Marshall. They attended a fath er and son banquet. As part of the program Mr. Marshall show- ed pictures he had taken on world tour last year, mostly of Africa. The group asked ques tions about the African natives and country. At the close of the meeting Clark Marshall sang two solos. There was a gathering of about 90 at the E. U. B. Church near Archer, where the banquet was held. Elmwood Chicago Flight Charles Marshall left Satur day morning, Sept. 23, by plane to attend a National Millers Convention at Chicago on Mon day and Tuesday. He went as chairman of field crops commit tee of American Farm Bureau. Elmwood P. E. G. Meeting j Mrs. Sanford L. Clements and! Mrs. Fleming Robb were co-hos-l tesses at a meeting of P. E. O.i Chapter C. S. of Lincoln, Friday, Sept. 23, at the home of Mrs. Clements. Members were inter ested in Elmwood as the home of the late Bess Streeter Aldrich. Elmwood Omaha Visitors Rev. and Mrs. T. H. Kamp man spent Friday visiting friends and relatives in Omaha, concluding with a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Morrison. Elmwood Clements Guests The home of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford L. Clements was the center of a family gathering over the weekend. Their son, John, wife and family of two from Indianapolis, Ind., an son, Arthur, from Kansas City, his wife and four children; son Fred, home from Peru, and his friend; Dale Vanderford, who is teaching at Unadilla, formerly of Peru and friend of the Cle ments. . . Elmwood Iowa Visitors Mr. and Mrs. Autin Gorham of Dunlap, Iowa, visited John Gon zales and Mr. and Mrs. Clark Gonzales over the weekend; all had lunch with Mrs. Emily Gon zales Monday noon. The Gor- hams are cousin's of Clark, and the late Wright Gonzales. They returned home Monday after noon. Elmwood Extension Club Miss Pearl Schultz gave the Extension Club Lesson on "En tertainment" at a group meet ing at the home fo Mrs. ,Hallie Stewart in Eagle Monday. Those attending from Elmwood were Mrs. Melvin Miller for Fairview Club and Mrs. Minnie Rosen koetter and Miss Minnie Kunz of Blue Bird Club. The various club presidents met with them at 3 o'clock. Mrs. Dudley Leavitt, President of the Blue Bird Club attended. Garry Wilhelm is student council representative of the sophomore class at Elmwood high school. In a story on class officers in The Journal recently, the name was given incorrectly. New Safety Patrol Officers Assigned Coucnel C J. Sanders, Ne braska Safety Patrol, announc ed today that 34 officer candi dates will b3 assigned to duty with the Patrol on Oct. 3. They were among the 53 men who satiff actorily completed five weeks of pre-Patrol training at the National Guard ; Camp at Ashland. The assignments are being made to fill ten vacancies and to comply with the 24-man increase approved by the 1955 Legislature. Total Patrol per sonnel will then number 161. Donald Leroy Morris of Ash land has been assigned to Al bion; James W. Roush of Friend has been assigned to Nebraska City. Col. deRussey Is Commended HFAD QUARTERS, SAC Col: John H. deRussy, base com mander at Offutt Air Force Base from April 1951 to June 1952, was recently commended for outstanding community rela tions work by the Salina, Kan., Chamber of Commerce and Gen. Curtis E. LeMay, Commander in Chief of the Strategic Air Com mand. As a wing commander at Smoky Hill Air Force Bas in Salina, Kan., Colonel deRussy' was given a certificate of ap preciation by the Salina Cham ber of Commerce for his unsel fish interest in the civic welfare of the city and for his promo-, tion of good relations between the citizens of Salina and the, personnel of the air base. The Chamber also addressed a ; letter commending the Colonel to Ceneral Nathan B. Twining, Air Force Chief of Staff. General LeMay, in a letter of commendation to Colonel deRus sy, stated: "I commend you for your devotion of time and effort in developing sound and healthy community relations and fur thering public understanding c the Air Force."
