Fifteenth Anniversary Noted At Elrnwood by W. S. C. S. Group ELMWOOD (Special) On Friday, Sept. 9, the Women's So ciety of Christian Service cele brated its 15th birthday. Meet ing was held in the Fellowship room of the Peter Van Fleet Msthodist Church, at two o'clock. -Meeting was opened with prayer by Mrs. G. R. Eveland expressing the thought "We must be about our Father's busi ness." Secretary Emily Gonzales and Treasurer Mrs. Emitt Cook gave I their reports. Devotions were given by Mrs. Fred Buell, an in spirational talk about the Twenty-third Psalm. Mrs. Sydney Moore was pianist with Mrs. Ray Parsll as song leader. Mrs. Blanche Kuehn, vice-president, opened the program with a talk on "The American Indi an." The worship center had been decorated with a picture of an Indian on a rough plateau, the usual kind of ground alloted to the Indians. Mrs. Harry Lannin presented the lesson on 'The American In dian,' and she showed many significant pictures. Mrs. Richard Pratt sang an Indian worship solo. An offering for work for them was received for the Indians. Mrs. Bert L. Story's topic was accomplishments of the Society. The Ladies Aid, Foreign Mission ary Society and the Home Mis sionary Society were combined 15 years ago, which now is call ed the W. S. C. S. Mrs. Story assisted with this merger. Charter members and past presidents were honored. Presi dent Eveland read extracts from the last meeting of the Ladies Aid and the first records of the new W. S. C. Mrs. H. F. Capwell, the first president, was present and read some of the old rec ords, giving a short talk. Several of the past presidents also read from the first minutes, each reading a portion dent last year and this year. The second past president, Mrs. El don Mendenhall, was unable to be present owing to an engage ment of the First District, of which she is president. - Refreshments were served from a table with lace cloth, and center piece of asters. Mrs. H. F. Capwell poured. The birthday table was decor ated with Navajo Indian baskets which held browrL eyed susans, a prairie flower, as were the other tables. The past presidents were honored at . the birthday table, and members Mrs. Clar ence Bucknall, Mrs. Howard Pool, and Mrs. Robert Clark. The meeting voted to accept the in ltation of Mrs. Charles Marshall to hold the October meeting at their new home in the country, members to meet first at the church and go in a body. There were 58 present, includ ing the pastor, eight visitors and three children. Hostess Miss Maud Creamer (a charter mem ber) and a capable committee. Mrs. Ernie Schultz and Danny, accompanied by her sisters, Car olyn Behrens and Erma Schweb- ke of Council Bluffs, Iowa, were in Alexandria, Minn., over the week end to attend the wedding of their brother, Vernon Beh rens and Faye Hvezda. Albert Kessler left today for his home in Kirkwood, Mo., after a visit at the Dale Kent home in Valley View. Mr. Kessler is the father of Mrs. Kent. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Dashnor of Tabor, Iowa, were visiting with friends here Saturday night. Mike Shellenbarger and, Stuart Nielsen left Monday for Ames, Iowa, to attend rush week at Iowa State College where both will be students for tne com ing vear. Stuart will study en gineering and Mike architecture. Thev will also participate Sat urday in the freshman marching band. , Word has been received by relatives that Mr. and Mrs. Ern est Buttery of San Fernando Calif., will arrive here to attend the K. Gus Stock suffered a heart at tack on Sunday afternoon and was taken to the Bryan Memor ial hospital where he is a little improved. On Monday evening Vernon Schewe was pleasantly surprised when a number of friends came in for supper and to help him celebrate his birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Grant Peters spent the weekend in Fremont and Sioux City visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. Chester Elseman came home Friday evening from Iowa where she has been with her father, who has been quite ill m the hospital there. Mr. and Mrs. Von Spreckleson and daughter arrived home Sunday evening from their six weeks trip to Germany and oth er places of interest. Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Lupardus left Friday for a two week vaca Mr. and Mrs. John Buck went to York on Wednesday to visit with their son John and wife for the rest of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thiel left last Thursday for a trip to Wis consin with their daughter, Margaret and husband. Mrs. Harold Schleifert was able to come here from the hos pital the first of this week. Increases were shown mainly in the agricultural and unskilled occupations. Non-agricultural labor de mand indicated by employer or ders was near the July level of 393 with 389 in August. Jobs filled through the Em ployment Service totaled 349 of which-72 were in agriculture. Plattsmouth and Cass County operations included orders for 21 non-agricultural workers, 29 persons directed to job oppor tunities, 23 non-agricultural and 37 agricultural- jobs filled, 17 new applications for work, and 102 visits to the office for em ployment services. Mrs. Darrell Mather went to her home at Plattsmouth after convelescing several weeks at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Emshoff. The Homemakers Club and their sponsors went on a roller skating party at Nebraska City Saturday evening. Holy Trinity Guild met Tues day with Mrs. George Meyer. Plans were completed and com mittees appointed for a supper Oct. 9. Mrs. Silas Everett came home from Lincoln Friday where she had been helping at the State Fair. Miss Laura Douty was recently honored at a din ner for being with the tele phone company at Seward for 45 years.
