L. Story. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery. Mrs. Douglas died at Colum bia, S. C, on June 7, at the age of 88 years. Music for services was by Mrs. Dwight Clements, Mrs. Helen Schneider and Mrs. V. G. Clements. Casket bearers were, nephews, Dean Douglas, Merrill Murray, Clark Gustin, Clyde Dale Ger beling and Ralph Gerbeling. . Mrs. Douglas was born in New Virginia, la., June 12, 1866. In 1872 she came to Nebraska with her parents in a covered wagon. Her father and mother, George and Leticie HyltonI set tled on a farm near Elmwood where Mattie grew to woman hood. She was graduated from the Weeping Water academy and taught school lor several years. While acting as principal of the Avoca school, she met Dr. George G. Douglas. They were married at Elmwood in June, 1894. and went to Ravenwood, Mo., to live. They later lived at Cortland, Thayer and Cordova before coming to Elmwood in 1918. Mrs. Douglas was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Leland Dwight, .who was 12 years of age, and Jamie, 18 months. Mrs. Douglas was a member of the Methodist church and was active in church and civic af fairs. She served as secretary for the Aid Society for 16 years and was president of the local and county Woman s club. In Cortland, she was a member of the Congregational church. She assisted her husband in his medical practice often go ing with him as helper. Togeth er, they managed a local hos pital for a good many years, having a few patients at a time. In late July, 1953, she suffer ed a stroke and was taken in September to Columbia, S. C. to be near her daughter.. She is survived by her daugh ter, Ellen, Mrs. L. A. Pitts, of Columbia; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Gerbeling and Mrs. Grace Plybon, both of Elmwood; and Mrs. Ed Gustin of Lincoln; a foster daughter, Mrs. Roy -Nelson of Alliance; nine' nephews and two nieces. Koly Trinity 70th Anniversary Noted AVOCA (Special) Holy Trinity church of Avoca ob served the 70th anniversary of its founding, Sunday, the name day of the church. Mrs. O. D. Straub, who at tended the dedication in 1885 was the only member of the original parish present. Rev. E. C.
