December Was Warmest Since '39 Bureau December was warm and dry with many bright, sunny days with less wind movement and low humidity, making it the warmest December in Nebraska since 1939, says the United States Weather Bureau at Lin coln. Mean temperatures averaged about 2 degrees above normal at some soutn-central stations to about 8 degrees above normal in the north-central portion. The heaviest precipitation oc curred over the northwestern and southeastern portions of the State. The central and north eastern portions were very dry. The northwestern portion re ceived light to moderate snow during the middle of the month. Light to moderate snow, which drifted very little, fell over the southern portion of the Pan handle and the southwestern 1 portion of the State during the 26-27th. The total average pre cipitation for the 2-month pe riod of November and Decem ber was the least of record for these two months since -J904,.and was the second least of record. Brief periods of moderately cold weather occurred at the be ginning of the month in the west, and over most of the state during the last 3 days of the month. Low temperatures oc curred on the 1st or 29th at most stations, and ranged from 14 degrees in the southeastern corner to 13 degrees at Curtis. The 22nd was the warmest day at most stations. No damaging storms were re ported. The mild open weather was favorable for livestock Feed lots were dry and firm. Stock cattle wintered well. Wheat remained in good to excellent condition in these areas. The rain early in the month moistened the drying surface soil, and subsoil mois ture remained, plantifui. The show of the 25-27th, which drifted very little, moistened the surface when it thawed later, but the subsoil remained very dry. The warm weather induced more than average growth. More than the usual amount of field work was done. Some tillage was also done in the west to retard wind erosion. CURIOSITY HURTS EAST ST. LOUIS. ILL.
