Shellenbarger 'Secretary, Board of Education No. 2689 December 9, 1954 Young People Must Watch Diets Carefully Good nutritional habits form ed during infancy are too often forgotten when children reach adolescence. Helen Becker, extension health specialist at the University of Nebraska, says that many young people under 21 are not eating what they should. Many moth ers, who watch small children's diets very carefully begin un consciously to neglect this vhen they become teenagers. The situation can be severe in young girls because preparation for childbearing begins in ado lescence. Poor nutrition during this period can result in child birth difficulties and frail, un healthy infants later on. . It was found in a survey that only 36 to 39 per cent of teen age girls were obtaining enough essential food elements. One reason fcr this was that too often they had a lunch which consisted of a candy bar and nothing more. Vitamin deficiency, as well as other nutritional deficiencies, are very common in young peo ple. There is often a marked lack of vitamin C as well as other important vitamins and also vital minerals in their diets. This deficiency can be overcome by taking a sufficient amount of fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Enriched bread is one of the best sources of the vitamins and minerals essential to the diet. It is one of the most reasonable and pleasant ways to obtain sdequate calories and will help to provide the essential food parts that are so often lacking in our youth's diets. It has been some 12 years since enriched bread was first put on the market. Today, about three-fourths or more of all white bread marketed in the United States is enriched. It ranks high among the foods which contribute to r providing the essential nutrients. Adults should encourage teen agers to eat adeauate amounts of bread along with meats, fruits" and vegetables, so that difficul ties can be avoided later on in life. ......
