Secretary of Agricul ture Ezra Taft Benson denied, however, that political pressure was responsible, but said that the change was made necessary by the, recent devastating droughts. RETAIL SALES Retail sales in the week end ed Sept. 17 slipped despite in creased purchases of food and clothing, according to a Dun & Bractstreet report. The total dol lar volume of retail trade was estimated to be from 2 to 6 per cent below that of a year ago. U. S. JOBLESSNESS AFL Chief Meany declared re cently that $6,000,000,000 will be lost in salaries and wages this year in the nation because of unemployment and called upon the Federal Government to take immediate steps to alleviate un employment. According to the Federal census, there are ap proximately 3,500,000 unemploy ed persons in this country. MAINE ELECTION The recent election in Maine, of its first Democratic Gover nor in twenty years has caused political leaders of both parties to hail the results for obviously different reasons. While Repub licans contend that the Gover norship fight was over purely local issues, the Democrats said the actual vote for the national candidates showed a strong movement against ths Admin istration. If the percentage of Republican losses should be pro jected over the entire country, it would indicate a Democratic sweep in November. THOMAS WALLING CO.
