Scriptural selections in the Lesson-Sermon entitled "Christ Jesus" will include the account as given in Matthew of Jesus' response to the followers of John the Baptist who asked if he was the Messiah (11:4, 5): ". . . Go and shew John again those ' things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them." The following correlative pas sage will be read from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Ed dy (131:26-30): "The mission of Jesus con firmed prophecy, and explained the so-called miracles of olden time as natural demonstrations of the divine power, demonstra tions which were not understood. Jesus' works established his claim to the Messiahship." The Golden Text is from John (1:17): "The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ." FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH Geo. L. Midweek prayer When You Think of Think of X-RAY FITTING SMOES o)z (Gospel of (Tl)rtst THE SEVEN UNITIES OF THE SPIRIT In Ephesians 4:3 Christians are clearly commanded to "keep the unity of the Spirit." The inspired apostle did not command an impossibility. Neither did he leave to our imagination what this UNITY is to be. He proceeds in the next three verses to show it is to consist or seven things: 1. There is one body, (verse 4) 2. There is one Spirit, (verse 4) 3. There is one hope, (verse 4) 4. There is one Lord, (verse 5) 5. There is one faith, (verse 5) 6. There is one baptism. (Verse 5) 7. There is one God. (verse 6) But notice the demoninational world's inconsistency in dealing with these seven UNITIES. It says, as the passage says, there is one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, and one God; but contrary to the passage, it says there are different bodies, different faiths, and different baptisms. THESE UNITIES ARE COMMANDS AND ARE NOT TO BE IGNORED. Unity can come only by accepting the Bible and the Bible ONLY as the divine guide. See, 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Periods and episodes of great ness, prosperity and splendor are interspersed in that history with periods of depression, deep suf fering, and utter destruction, i What is amazing is that that ancient history, surveyed against present-day events' and condi tions, often reads very much like ithe Twentieth Century. The op pression of the Jews by a hostile Pharaoh in Ekypt can be com I pared with Hitler's attempt ut terly to annihilate the Jews in Germany, and to extend that annihilation to every part of the world that he hoped to conquer. So the Old Testament Scrip tures have interest, vividness and significance for discerning read ers today, that escapes those wrho have read them only as records of the past. What is most deeply significant in those Scriptures, however, is that out of, and in, a world of slavery and bondage, they not only contain the essential idea of freedom, but they reveal the hope, power-and persistent spirit of survival. Not only is it significant that the spirit of freedom persists in a world of bondage, but reli giously there is the miracle of the survival of faith, and the aspiration for truth and right eousness. Despite the deep-dyed sins of nation and individuals, what shines forth is a pure and perfect aspiration for God, and a sublime devotion to the commonweal.
