Daniel Gantt, who served as chief justice of - the supreme court from January to May, 1878, was born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, June 29, 1814. He spent his boyhood in Perry County, including in his educa tion the study of law. He prac need law m Pennsylvania forjWSil DC Friday a while, but in 1857 moved to the new territory of Nebraska, settling at Saratoga, about three miles north of Omaha. Like many other territorial pioneer, he plunged immediate ly into the political life of the new territory. He wras a candi date for the legislature in 1857, but was defeated. He moved to Omaha and in 1861 was elect ed city treasurer, a post he held for three years. He ran for the legislature again in 1863, and was elected. As a member of the Ninth Legislature, he ard ently supported the basic Re publican measures before that body, including the petition to Congress for an enabling act to permit the people of the tern- ; tory to draf t a constitution. (The j question of statehood was hotly fought in 1864, with the advo cates of 'statehood being de feated). President Lincoln appointed Mr. Gantt United States Attor ney in 1864. One of his achieve ments in that office was to pros ecute successfully lottery swind lers then operating in the ter ritory. In 1853, the Gantts re moved to Nebraska Citv and 1 Mr nnntt, pntrrpH the nrartire 1 of law. He also lectured at Otoe i TTnivprsitv. thp .nhnrt-lived Pres byterian College at Nebraska City. Mr: Gantt was elected an as sociate justice of the supreme court in 1872. At that time a supreme court justice served as a district judge also, making the circuit of the yarious counties ! in his district. At stated times the judges met at the supreme court in the capitol. He-died at his home in Nebraska City, May 29, 1878, having served less than five months as chief justice.
