Mr. and Mrs. John Emshoff and daughter, Anna Mae, mov rd into their home Monday re cently purchased from Mrs.' Al ma Minderman. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sutton returned Monday from their wedding trip and will make their heme in Omaha. Young people of the Congre gational church, Weeping Water and their pastor, Rev. Roger Grow, came to Avoca Sunday evening where they held a de votional service and a round tabic discussion on '"What Do We Expect of Our Parents?'' A 1c Arthur Dettmer left Sunday for New Jersey where he will go to Europe. His wife will stay with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nabcr, at Syracuse. Mrs. Marie Sudman Dies At Hospital George Sudman and Mrs. Har ry Herman were in Omaha Tues day to see Mrs. Marie Sudman, wno was a patient at Methodist nospital for minor surgery for a nerve in her face, and passed away Thursday morning. The body was taken to Nebraska City to Peterson Mortuary and fu neral services were held Sunday at First Lutheran church. Burial v as m uie cnurcn cemetery west of Avoca. Avoca Mr. and Mrs. Paul Eveland and family of Elmwood were Thursday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Baier and fam ily. Mrs. Joe Case of Plattsmouth has been helping at the bank this week. A 3c Jerry and Mrs. Johnson are leaving this week for Wash ington, D. C, where he will be stationed after visiting her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knabe, and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer John son. Mrs. Robert Nutter and chil dren, of Denton spent Tuesday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Moseman. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Freeman left Friday for Kansas City to visit his brother, Frank. I Avoca Woman's club met ; Wednesday with Mrs. Ernest j Norris. The program was "Pic tures and Their Frames". Robert and Mrs. Ruhge ar rived here from California where he has been stationed and recently discharged from the army. Riti and Katherine Neumei ster, Edward Behrns all took treats to school at 105 honoring their birthdays. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wessel and daughters joined Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thormalen at the home of the ladies parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Steinhoff for dinner Sunday and also attend ed mission feast at Syracuse. Avoca Extension Club Elects Officers The Extension club met Fri day with Mrs. Julia Mickle. The lesson, "Food for Older People", was given by Mrs. Albert Carr. "Foreign Food in Nebraska", demonstrated by Mrs. Dena Ruze, Mrs. Everman, Mrs. Henry Smith, Mrs. J. H. F. Ruhze. As this was election of officers the following were elected: Mrs. Wil liam Kapler, president; Mrs. Ernest Emshoff, vice-president; Mrs. Walter Everman, secretary treasurer; Mrs. J. H. F. Ruhze, news reporter; Mrs. Dena Ruze, song leader. Avoca Cpl. and Mrs. Leonard Have man of Ft. Riley were here over the week end -visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ruhze have received word their son, Robert, has been discharged from the army. The A club which is the honor so ciety club met and made plans for a carnival later this fall. Avoca On Tuesday evening the fam ily of Elmer Hallstrom came and surprised him on his birthday by coming for supper. Later in the evening the West Pinochle club came and also surprised him. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Colzan, Los Angeles, visited Miss Meta Mueller Thursday and also vis ited with old friends. She is the former Elizabeth Shaffer. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Kirkbeck, Grand Island, have been here visiting the past week. She has been his housekeeper for four j years and they were recently j married. Avoca Ladies' Aid Meets Thursday Mrs. Walter Noerrlinger and Mrs. Ernest Norris with Mrs. Louis Ruhge helping in Mrs. Norris place were hostesses at ladies aid Thursday. Mrs. Albert Sill gave the devotions on dif ferent kinds of love. It was voted to have a church dinner when Wade Shepard could be here with us" some Sunday in October. The fruit was also brought for the Children's Home to be packed. Mrs. Calvin Car sten was voted to be delegate to the Lincoln association, at Cortland, Oct. 8. Avoca Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Carsten, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Hoback, Mr. and Airs. Ernest Norris left Tuesday to go fishing in Minne sota. Marion Pittman has been tak ing his vacation and John Mar quardt is substituting fcr him. Mrs. II. H. Marquardt returned heme Friday from the Methodist hospital. Mrs. Bessie Paap is here visit ing with her sister, Mrs. Martha Ruge. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Koever and sons entertained at a double birthday supper honoring their son, Michael and Henry Mase man who had birthdays during the past week. Also present were Mrs. Maseman and Mrs. Ella Damke. Avoca Entertains At Surprise Party Mrs. Henry Maseman enter tained at a surprise birthday dinner Sunday, Sept; 27 for her husband. Present were Mr. and Mrs. John Maseman and family, Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Maseman and family, Lincoln, Mrs. Myron ' Shroder and Miss Verle Nutzman, Lincoln,' Mr. and Mrs. Walter Halm and daughter, Syracuse, Mrs. Robert Nutter and children, Denton, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Maseman, Omaha, Mrs. John Nutzman, Avoca, Richard Maseman. Lincoln. Avoca Mrs. John Wolph picked some colored leaves this week and later discovered she had also picked some poison ivy. Avoca i Promotion Day Is Held Sunday The Congregational Sunday school held promotion day Sun day with Mrs. Aeschbacher chairman. Mrs. J. H. F. Ruhge presented Mrs. John Wolph's class who recited the "Beauti tudes." Mrs. Henry Smith pre sented the primary class and told what they had learned. Mrs. Walter Everman presented Sally Carsten who played a piano solo and also three other members of her class. John Stubbendick has a class of boys and had two promotions. The I classes repeated The Lord's Prayer and were given Bible markers with The Lord's Prayer printed on them. Jerry, Janet and Timothy Nutter, Denton, were guests. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dumke and Lee, Mrs. Ella Dum ke, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hall strom, Robert Hallstrom, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hennings, Hen ry Oelhers, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Zaiser, Misses Tena and Anna Oehlers, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Miller and daughter of Elm wood; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mose man were Tuesday evening cuests of Mr. pnd Mrs. Herman Kammon and family. Clarence, who is home on leave, showed pictures of places he had been, including the Golden Gate Avoca Bridge, Yosemite Park, San Francisco. San Diego, Treasure Island. He also showed scenes of his home and the County Fair. All had a chance to see the amateur radio station which Miss Hilda and Clarence Kam man hold licenses to operate. Thev have contacted 26 stations. While Clarence is home he is building a larger station. He re turns this week to Shaggs Island. Mr. Henry Kamman entertained on his accordion. The Neighborhood club met Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ruhge. Mr. and Mrs. John Emshoff are new members. The 4 Corner club held their annual picnic at the farm home of Mr. and Airs. George Meyer Sunday noon. 1 IF ..si ' 2H Mrs. Bessie Core Phone 4377 Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Han sen of Omaha called at the Bes sie Core heme Sunday evening. A picnic was held Sunday, September 27, beginning at 2:00 p. m. for all Scouts and families, committeemen and families at Camp Menke. Employees and management of the Eager Produce Co. gath ered at the city park Sunday for their annual picnic. All the families were represented. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Weast of San Diego, Calif., spent Friday night at the home of Mrs. Weast's brother, Edward Ing ram. Mr. and Mrs. Weast were en route home from Palm Beach, Florida, where they, had spent two weeks at the home of their daughter and family. Mrs. Roxie Stafford, who has been making her home here at the home of Mrs. Kathryn Reichart, was taken to Wahoo Saturday where she will spend the winter at a nursing home. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dihel are now located in Yuba City, Calif., where Mr. Dihel expects to work this winter with his fa ther. If they like it in Cali fornia they expect to locate there. Mrs. Fred Myers was" taken to Clarkson hospital in Omaha Sunday and underwent a seri ous operation on Monday. She is getting along very well. Snyder of Papillion were calling on Mrs. J. B. Larsen at the hotel Wed nesday evening. Mrs. Jesse Sell and Dave of Hastings came down Thursday for the funeral of Mrs. Hoover. Mrs. Chris Murray returned home Tuesday of last week aft er spending nearly a week vis iting at the home of her sister in Wyoming. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Marquardt and children of Avoca spent Sunday with Mrs. Bedella Stan der and attended the Urwin Norris wedding. Herbert Petereit is out of service, having been released on September 10. He has been at Detroit, Mich., for a few days visiting with a buddy. Mrs. Elizabeth Long is hav ing a vacation from her work at the Power Company office. Mrs. Arlie Ragoss is working in her place while she is gone. Mrs. Floy Fens has returned to her home in Madison, Wis., after spending a couple of weeks with her mother, Mrs. Roxie Stafford at the Reichard home. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Walker of Counciil Bluffs were in town Monday after coming back from Kansas. They also stopped at York to see a brother, Ned, who is living there now. He wasn't very well. They saw some nice corn and some pretty badly burned. ARMY SAVINGS The Army estimates that it has saved $13,000,000 during the past fiscal year as a result of efficiency suggestions submitted by its military and civilian per sonnel.
