THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL 40E FOUR Thursday, January 1, 1953 Devils Hold Drills; Await Vacation Indians Vacation time drills will be- climaxed with a practice tilt with South high of Omaha on Friday, Coach Merle Stewart pointed- out today, as his Platts mouth Blue Devils prepare for the resumption of cage activity as school reopens next week. Currently boasting an unde feated string of four games, Stewart's crew scrimmaged against a group of ex-high Devils later in the season. The Indians are scheduled to meet Waverly Friday night, January 2. Except for the Ashland tilt, Weeping Water competition has been against Class D and Class C teams, including Eagle and Louisville. The Indians had trouble with Eagle, winning 41- schoo? cage stars, who are home i 40 but swept by Louisville with nn vaMt nn frnm rn ppp Tups- : v."Houvc day and followed that up with drills against an Offutt Air Force Base team today. They'll lay-off for the New Year's holiday before meeting Omaha South in a practice tilt Friday. The Blue Devils are not sched uled for season activity until Wednesday, when they travel to Weeping Water to meet the In dians tutored by ex-Husker ath lete, Darwin Salestrom. Weeping Water has lost only to Ak-Sar-Ben conference con tender Ashland in pre-vacation tilts and has shown promise as one of the strong Class C teams. Heavy Cage Slate On Tap During Coming Week Eagle and Palmyra are slated to re-open the basketball cam paign in Cass county activity on Friday. January 2, as renewed interest in the cage battle gets underway. Six other county teams are slated to renew action on the maples next Tuesday, while three more will see action on Wednesday. Avoca has displayed offensive talent and promises a good game. The Union-Murdock clash is scheduled for the Murdoek court. But Coach Buzz Gake meier's crew has been unable to play at home yet this year. Plattsmouth again entered the D-S-C league but found the going pretty tough, while the American Le gion Junior Baseball team had a successful campaign. The summer marked the ad vent of Plattsmouth into the midget baseball field, however. A selected team competed in state and inter-city play, while a mid get league of six teams function ed with success for a six week period. A swimming program during the season also boosted recrea tional activities on the local scene. Fishing during the past sum mer was about as bad as at any time in recent years. Nebt Weeping Vater Church Group Has Sleigh Party The Christian Endeavor held a sleigh-riding party on Sunday evening out on the hill by Mr. and Mrs. George Bates. A large crowd of young people reported having a wonderful time. After the sleigh-riding the young people gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lerov Zessin and Jimmy for chili, co coa, cake and cookies. Mr. and Mrs. Alton Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. Eanos Plunkett, Mr. and Mrs. David Baxter and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bond and Ricky were also guests. Daleene Sterling had the mis mortune to meet with an acci dent during the sleigh ride. Some one ran into her with a sled and she had to be taken to the doctor and seven stitches were taken in her right leg and three stitches in Jher left eye brow.
