OP00Q O0C3GQ 0O0Q0GO Bible Comment: Startling Changes In John's Character Caused by Gospels QNE of the best examples of the v gospels' great transforming power is seen in the character change so apparent in John. He was the disciple who seemed to be filled with ambition and who wanted to have the foremost place with his brother James in what he believed was an earthly kingdom about to be established on earth by Jesus. He also had a vengeful person ality. It was John who wanted Jesus to call down fire from heaven as Elija did and burn up several villagers who treated them discourteously. Yet this man became one of the strongest proponents of Love as the only acceptable way of life. He even came to regard Love as the supreme being, the very nature of God himself. To John, Love was the true test of a Christian life. Love and light became John's theme. He asserted that a man who said he loved God, yet hated his neighbor, was a liar. To John, a loveless life was a life existing in darkness. It is this ramification of his conception of Love and light as one, that John has penetrated into the present and explained the basis of many of our problems, v We know that many of the earth's people are not living in the light of love. They are groping in the misty darkness of hate, preju dice and mutual distrust. John called the man hating his brother "a murderer." Murder on a highly organized scale is the thing we see most in our modern, loveless world. Certainly man would do well to heed the words of John, take up the ways of Love and find the light. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES 'Probation After Death" is the subject of the Lesson-Ser mon which will be read in Christian Science churches throughout the world on Sun day. October 26, 1952. The Golden Text is: "The sting of death is sin:- and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God. which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.' (I Corinthians 15:56. 57 . Other Bible cita tions include, ' wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obey ed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my ab sence, work out your own sal vation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in vou both to will and to do of his good pleasure." (Philippians 2:12. 13. The Lesson-Sermon also in cludes the following passage from the Christian Science text book. "Science and Health with Kev to the Scriptures" by Mary. Baker Eddy. "Mortals need not fancy that belief in the exper ience of death will awaken them to glorified being. Universal salvation rests on progression and probation, and is unattain able without them. As death flndeth mortal man. so shall he be after death, until probation and growth shall effect the needed change." (Page 291). Edwin T.
