Weeping Water Mrs. Edward Van Horn, Correspondent Sixteen Attend Christian Woman's Fellowship Meeting The Christian Woman's Fel lowship met Thursday. October 2. in the church parlors for their general meeting:. Sixteen mem bers and five guests, Mrs. Carla Sack of Lincoln. Mrs. Don Schultz and two sons of Walton and Joan Dominso. were present T , j .v,' meeting with the hymn "Let I Jesus Come Into Your Heart." Mrs. Wm. Klemme read the minutes of the last meeting. November 5 was the day set for the annual bazaar and chicken Pie supper. The two circles are planning on having a candy tooth and a fish pond booth. Mrs. Maurice Hammons was in charee ' of devotions. Mrs. Joyce Hammons read the 14th chapter of Mark. 17-26. Mrs. Edward Freeman read a poem "The Cross was His Own' Mrs Hammons' read a very in-' teresting article "I Came To The Communion Table." The group then sang "Must Jesus Bear The Cross Alone." Mrs. Rothe gave the mission ary lesson on Human Rights. She told about the Amana Colonies that are close to Cedar Rapids. Iowa. There is seven villages in this colonv. This colony is well known for their making of the Amana deep freeze. The meeting was closed with thf 1 Dendiction. Mrs. S. H. Kenneth Wiles, vice-president, gave the welcome address and introduced the hiah school eirls trio. Dixie Applegate. Carol Ambler and Susan Hobson. They sans "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" and were accompanied by Miss Kathryn Ellis. Mr. Wiles introduced Marion Stone who in turn introduced the other members of the school beard. He then introduced Mr. J. R. Piper, superintendent of the Weeping Water school. He invited the parents to visit his office and the school at any time. The group was led in singing "God Bless America" by Dixie Apnlesate and Carol Ambler. Mrs. Neil Fitzpatrick. presi dent, presided at a short bus iness meeting. Rev. Fred Gardner closed the meeting with a prayer. Mrs. Stanley Wood and Mrs. Harold Elliot presided at the beautifully decorated table. September 30 at the Methodist church with a large crowd in attendance. Rev. Emmet Haas of the First Chritsian church of Nebraska City was the speaker for this observance. The Congregational church choir under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Wallick sup plied the music. Five Bibles were placed with the Sunday school superintend ents of the four churches and one in the public library. Re ceiving the Bibles were Law rence Eidenmiller for the Meth odist church, Mrs. Philip Comp ton for the United Missionary church, David Bater for the Christian church. John Bender for the Congregational church and Mrs. Herbert Ratnour for the library. Mr. and Mrs. P. R. I. Rookstool with Mrs. Hattie Sperry as co-hostess. Mrs. Kenneth Dokter and Mrs. Ethel Herman gave the lesson "Easy Housekeeping." Twelve members and two guests. Mrs. Verne Roberts and Mrs. Henry Knaup were present. The hostesses served a deli cious lunch. Weepin.a: Water Woman's Club Has First Meeting The Weeping Water Woman's j Club held its first meeting Tuesday evening. October 7 at the Conregational church. Stan Matzke, the former edi tor of the Journal, was speaker. Guests were public school teachers, the Junior Woman's Club and their families and families of the Woman's Club members. After the program a coffee hour presided over by the offi cers of the executive committee was held. Weerlns Water Twenty-Two At Society Meeting The Sunny Hill Helping Hand Aid Society met Thursday, Oc tober 2 at the home of Mrs. Glen Heneger. Twenty-two members and two guests, Mrs. Eugene Colbert and Mrs. Leon ard Doty, were guests. Mrs. Rasmus Jensen, presi dent, presided at the business meeting. The afternoon was spent piec ing a quilt top which will be tied at the next meeting. The next meeting will be November 6 with Mrs. Gordon Heneger. Mrs. Edith Wiles is spending a week with her aunt and un cle, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Brannon and family of Nehawka. Weniine Water Miss Lindsey Is Shower Honoree A miscellaneous shower was given by Mrs. Herbert Oehler king and Mrs. John Dankleff of Elmwood for Miss Eleanor Lindsey. Fifteen guests at tended the shower. Guessing games were played. Mrs. Chester Irons and her daughter, Mrs. Don Hoffman, sang two songs about Eleanor and Henry s life. A clothes pin bag was brought in and Miss Lindsey tied it on. A large clothes basket was brought in filled with gifts and she was told to hang up her gifts. The hostesses served a lovely lunch. Van Horn and Johnnie. Vetntnar Water Brother Killed At Crossing Frank Hunt received word that his brother, W. W. Hunt of Rort Anne, N. Y., was killed crossing a railroad track Sep tember 23. Mrs. Hunt has been staying with her father, John Ekstrom for a short time since the death of her mother. That at the general elec tion in November 1952. there shall be submitted to the electors of the State of Nebraska for approval the following amendment to Article III, section 19. of the Constitution of Nebraska, which is hereby proposed by the Legislature: "Sec. 19. The Legislature shaU never grant any extra compensation to any public officer, agent, or servant after the services have been rendered nor to any contractor after the contract has been entered into, nor shall the compensation of any public officer, in cluding any officer whose compensa tion is fixed by the Legislature, be increased or diminished during his term of office except that, when there are officers elected or appointed to a court, board, or commission having more than one member and the terms of one or more members commence and end at different times, the com pensation of aU members of such court, board, or commission may be in creased or diminished at the beginning of the full term of any member thereof. The necessary revenue of the state and its governmental sub divisions shall be raised by taxation in such manner as the Legislature may direct. Taxes shall be levied by valua tion uniformly and proportionately upon all tangible property, and fran chises, except that the Legislature may provide for a different method of taxing motor vehicles: Provided, that such tax proceeds from motor vehicles taxed in each county shall be allocated to the state, counties, townships, vil lages, and school districts of such county In the same proportion that the levy of each bears to the total levy of said county on personal tangible property. The amendments proposed are as follows: (1) To add four new sections, to appear in Article VH of the Constitu tion of Nebraska, as sections 14, 15, 16, and 17, and to read as follows: "Sec. 14. There is hereby established a State Department of Education which shall be comprised of a State Board of Education and a Commissioner of Education. The State Department of Education shall have general super vision and administration of the school system of the state end of such other activities as the Legislature may direct." "Sec. 15. Their term of office shall be for six years each, except as here inafter provided. Their duties and powers shall be prescribed by the Legislature, and they shall receive no compensation, but shall be reimbursed their actual expense incurred in the performance of their duties. The mem bers of the State Board of Education shall not be actively engaged in the educational profession and they shall be electee, on a nonpartisan baUot. Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, the heads of the various executive or civil departments shall have power to appoint and re move all subordinate employees in their respective departments." (3) To amend Article VTL section 1, to read as follows: "Sec. 1. The Governor. Secretary of State, Treasurer. Attorney General, and Commissioner of Education shall, under the direction of the Legislature, constitute a board of commissioners for the sale, leasing, and general man agement of all lands and funds set apart for educational purposes, and for the investment of school funds in such manner as may be prescribed by law." (4) To amend Article VII, section 13, to read as follows: "Sec. 13. The general government of the state normal schools as now exist ing, and such other normal schools as may be established by law. shall be vested, under the direction of the Leg islature, in a board of seven members to be styled Board of Education of State Normal Schools, six of whom shall be appointed by the Governor, with the adv-e and consent of the Legislature, two each for a term of two. four, and six years, and two each biennium thereafter for a term of six years, and the Commissioner of Edu cation shall be a member ex officio. The duties and powers of the board shall be prescribed by law, and the members thereof shall receive no com pensation for the performance of their duties, but may be reimbursed their actual expenses incurred therein." (5) To amend Article XVTI, section 3, to read as follows: "Sec. 3. Until otherwise provided by law the salary of the Lieutenant Governor shall be twice the salary of a member of the Legislature." That at the general elec tion in November 1952. there shall be submitted to the electors of the State of Nebraska for approval the follow ing amendment to Article XVI, sec tion 2, of the Constitution of Nebraska, which is hereby proposed by the Leg islature: "Sec. 2. When three-fifths of the members elected to the Legislature deem it necessary to call a convention to revise, amend, or change this con stitunon. they shall recommend to the electors to vote at the next elec tion of members of the Legislature, for or against a convention, and if a majority of the electors voting on the proposition, vote for a convention, the Legislature shall, at its next session provide by law for calling the same: Provided, the votes cast in favor of calling a convention ishall not be less than thirty-five per cent of the total votes cast at such election. The con vention shall consist of not more than one hundred members, the exact num ber to be determined by the Legisla ture, and to be nominated and elected from districts in the manner to be prescribed by the Legislature. Such members shall meet vvithin three monihs after their election, for the purpose aforesaid. No amendment or change of this constitution, agreed upon by such convention, shall take effect until the same has been sub mitted to the electors of the state, and adopted by a majority of those voting for or against the same." If a majority of the electors voting on any such amendment adopt the same, it shall become a part of this Constitution, pro vided the votes cast in favor of such amendment shall not be less than thirty-five per cent of the total votes cast at such election.
