University of Nebraska agri cultural ensineers estimate that from 500 to GOO farmers are us- ing drying equipment. The amount is about equally divid'-u betv.ecn heated uir and unheal ed air systems. Farmers using the dryers in clude n-;t only grain growers but an .nrreasing number of dairymen, who have found that artificial drying helps solve the age-old problem of preserving the quality of forage crops. At fi-st g-ain farmers con- er?a crop crying only an tsjergency measure fcr unus ually "wet years. Now more and more of them r.re adopting the system to an every-year prac tice. Harvesting with the combine thresher and the corn picker, with the use cf mechanical dry ing equipment, makes it prac tical for wheat and corn grow ers to harvest their grain earlier and handle and store their crops in better condition. When grain is harvested early there is less less in the field from shattering, too. Research at the University of Nebraska College cf Agriculture is continuing in order to make crop drying even more practical on the 'farm. Investigators like George M. Petersen of the ag ricultural engineering depart ment are working on the amount of air flow needed, for example, to determine the most economical size of equipment needed. The engineers are ex perimenting both with grain and hay. The dairy department, which buys a large quantity of hay for i' its herd, has lound drying prac--tical for both chopped and baled -hay. Sometimes the hay pur- ' chased contains too much mois--ture for safe storage, and Dr. L. P. Kelly, chairman of the de-., partment, has found unhcated air drying the answer to the--problem. 'Researchers have found that' 10 to 15 per cent mere of alfalfa leaves can be saved by stacking chopped hay over a drying sys tem. Farmers who have been help ed by engineers in getting their crops drying program started are using the method as a reg-. u . i .utt.u, tw. im port the system, has paid for itself in the first year cf oper ation. Control For Red Spider Mites Told Here is a way to fight those red spider mites wnich are in festing many evergreen, some rose plants and phlox. Entomologists at the Univer sity cf Nebraska recommend a wetta'ole sulphur spray, using two level tablespoons of the ma terial to a quart of water. Three sprayings should be given at in tervals of a week. A nicotine sulfate spray also is recom mended at standard strength. When wettable sulphur spray is used, however, it is helpful in controlling rusts and mildew common to perennial phlox. .
