THE PLATTSMOUTH JOURNAL PAGE EIGHT Section B Thursday, January 24, 1952 Ar-pzzpm:$ A a a a uuuimnL isms w 1 9 Sr'lrTltjV 'frTiyfFi T ft 1 M . Practically everyhody some time in their life makes an ef fort to save a few pennies by cutting corners. We made such an attempt during the latter part of December by trying to use up a quantity of lc postal cards before the new 2c rate went into effect January 1. With a thousand or more pos tal cards used for notification of subscription expiration on hand, we here at The Journal decided to mail out January and February notices at the same time, make a saving of eight or ten bucks before Uncle Sam put on the squeeze. If we had known in advance the quantity and quality of the yowls we would re ceive, it is doubtful the mailing would have been made. The saving just wasn't worth it. Here and now, we wish to as sure subscribers their expiration dates have not been tampered with. Those numbers that ap pear following your address label is your expiration date. The first number is the month, second the day, followed by the year. Take a glance now at the upper right hand corner on page one if it's wrong, we'll right it. If it's due, send us the moola. In the meantime any body want to buy 873 one cent government postcards cheap? . Vpvi TVrsrn In Platfsmmifrh know or remember that Demmie ' Hiatt, the household furnishings man for these many years, or ganized and conducted the first high school band here some 60 years ago. Mr. Hiatt told the story to this writer several months ago. Money for the band was donated by Platts mouth business men, the amount carrying it through its first year. Only 15 pieces were in that first group, but Demmie says they could make a whale of a lot of noise. Wonder how many Journal readers could name members of that first high school musical organization? Any of them still around? What ever happened to those people who were buying foun tain pens that wrote under wa ter, and the user was continually Irritated by the necessity of get ting into a bathtub to use the pen?' Another item that swept the country for a year and then faded was our old friend Hada col. Druggists tell us that today the elixir is about the most dead item on their shelf. The story Is of a Colorado druggist being stuck with a carload of the stuff. It made millions for one guy, give the country some of it's best belly laughs of the year, and probably didn't hurt anyone unless it was those who actually believed in LeBlanc. . Inflation ' is something that should be Avoided at all costs. Inflation wines out the value of savings, and' lowers the actual purchasing power of all. If it goes - far ' enough, it always brings on a period of deflation, which is worse than inflation. Ask dad he went through the thirties. - -.. v Our letter department is on the increase. Now, we learn, even -one of our comic strip artists is a regular subscriber to The Plattsmouth Journal. Art Beeman. Altadena, Calif., artist who draws that popular strip "Those Were the Davs . . .
