Book Review (From the Platter) "Of Mikes and Men" by Jane story of early radio, when an- nouncers doubled as soundmen I and microphones went dead once a program, into these primitive conditions in the early. 1930's walked Jane Woodfin who had never seen a micro phone. KUKU hired canes as a con tinuity writer and she also doubled for "Nancy Lee, the Bet ter Homes Girl of the Golden West Network. She glorified in her job. Especially in her im mense salary of $25 a week. She received something of a jolt when she discovered that only $10 came in cash; the rest was made up in merchandise from the station's advertisers 20 loaves of bread, 10 pounds of nuts and bolts, and two bottles of Patton Brothers Hair Renew with a '"magic massage brush to stimulate sluggish scalps." The station manager was ar rested by government officials for broadcasting on a wider range than he was paying for. Next the Reverend A. H. Kra mer, conductor of the Hour of Family Prayer, was apprehended for selling 'splinters olf the original manger." The Rever end went the way of the sta tion manager. . Then there was the ' Magic Inner Magic Eye," clad in racoon skin coat and derby and always smelling of bathtub gin, who during the midnight half hour, advised the lovelorn, told fortunes, iound missing people, but '"made no claim to supernatural powers." These are but three of the hil arious characters who passed through the studios of KUKU. A great spirit of comradship existed among the station's em ployees. They loved their work and KUKU They stayed at the studio late at night devising new ways of attracting sponsors, dig ging up live talent, writing irre sistable copy, and keeping KU KU out of the red. Their un failing warmth and good humor in the hectic days of prohibition and depression are recaotur:d in Jane Woodfin's sparkling de scription of her early radio days.
