Self-Employed Urged Check Security Benefits" Self-employed persons earn ing credits toward old-age and survivors insurance may obtain detailed information on their rights and responsibilities under the amended Social Security Law through a new booklet. James W. Doarn, Regional Director of the Federal Security Agency with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, announced. This booklet entitled Do You Work for Yourself will be available at local social security offices with in a few days. It tells in plain language what the law means to persons who own their own business or work for themselves, and explains how the self-em ployed should make their first reports early next year for so cial security purposes. In announcing the new book let, Mr. Doarn emphasized that since the beginning of 1951 all self-employed persons who earn $400 or more a year are covered by the Social Security Law, with the exception of farm operators, doctors, lawyers, dentists, pro fessional engineers, full-time accountants and certain other professional people. The book let gives examples of monthly benefits for retired self-employed persons and for families of deceased persons. Social security cards may be obtained at any local social security office. x. Of the total of 4,600,000 self employed persons brought into the social security system by the law, approximately 368,000 live in the six States compris ing this region of the Federal Security Agency. A breakdswn of the estimated number of self employed covered by the law in each of these States is as fol lows: Iowa, 87,000; Kansas, 67, 000; Missouri. 125 000; Nebraska, 46,000: North Dakota, 20,000; and South Dakota, 23,000.
