Missouri River Development Is Outlined To Club Plattsmouth Rotarians receiv ed an idea of what is involved in controlling the mighty Missouri River Tuesday, when films of the river's work, and of the Army Engineers struggle again st the natural activities of the river were shown. The colored films were part of Herb Frepbure's Tuesday noon program. Freeburg was not pres ent at the meeting. The films were shown by John O'Hare, vets instructor at Plattsmouth. who was a guest of Superintendent Tom Friest. The films gave Rotarians an idea of the potential effective ness of barge service on the Missouri, explained a detailed description of the contour of the river, and brought out certain phases of work involved by the engineers. Of interest to the group also was a visit from Adrian Newens, Sr., father of Adrian Newens. lormer manager of the tele phone company office here. The elder Newens, a Huntington. Virginia Rotarian. has served as past governor of district 172 in the upper central part of New York and Canada. He is also a past president of the Hunting ton club. The society pro vides emergency financial as sistance in the form of non-interest bearing loans and grants and finances the higher educa tion of dependent children of Air Force personnel. Heading the local drive are Lt. Fridena and TSgt. C. A. Vernon. While soliciting mem berships here, the Air Force also displayed the new car which it will give away Satur day at the base. New Members of the Aid So ciety will be permitted to enter Offutt Air Force Base Saturday, the first time in several years the base has been open to the public. Any individual, either mili tary or civilian, may become a member of the Aid Society by nn vinor tVp annrnnrintp memhpr- ship fee. Donations may be for J either the general tund or the General Henry H. Arnold Edu cational Fund. Memberships are $1 annually, and range from one to five hundred dollars for the various categories. A $50 donation entitles contributors to life membership. The Aid Society's funds are rapidly becoming depleted, ac cording to information available here. In 1950 alone, the Society spent nearly $900,000 while con tributions were only $475,044. In 1949 expenses were nearly one million dollars and income only slightly over $400,000. Air Force personnel are an important part of community life in Plattsmouth. Apparently members of the air service will be residents here for many years. By subscribing to the Aid Society, residents here may be helping their neighbor, or providing their children's friends with an adequate edu cation. The Society expects an in crease demand for funds during 1951 due to rapid expansion of the Air Force. It hopes that friends of the Society will con tinue to support, and will en large their support to meet in creased demands. If there was such a thing as a real secret, none of us wouxd know it.
