He hated himself because he couldn't do the things other people could do; he hated himself because he was so bashful; he hated himself becausej?e so often made a fool of him self. He went through the war not caring wheth er he lived or died. He would volunteer for dangerous missions just to see if he could take it. He wanted to prove to himself that hp. was not a coward. He was still bitter after he got out ot the army. He got a job, worked three days and quit. He had left school at the end of the eighth grade. Cut now he decided to go to the veterans' school, and this was the first time he had ever felt the stirring of ambition. Cut he worked so hard that he became ill. Now he had something to worry about: stomach ulcers. Next his eyes became infected, and a carbuncle devel oped. Soon he was in the hospital. Lying in the hospital, he read a great deal He came across the following in a book that was handed him: "You are an individual; there is no one like you; tnere never has been; and there never will be anyone like you." Now he bogan to think. He suddenly realized that he didn't need to b3 like all those people he had resented. He was dif ferent and he would make the most of his differences. He began to like himself better; he began liking other people. Gradually he became happier. As he became happier, his physical self im proved, and he says from that time on he didn't worry.
